Masaaki Yoshida aka Anchorsong has been winning friends here in the UK and internationally throughout Europe with his live shows, and yes we do mean live: Yoshida’s music is created with a sampler and a keyboard, from scratch at his gigs. Sometimes these sounds are augmented by a string quartet.

With 3 EP releases in his native Japan, Anchorsong relocated to London and soon hooked up with the Brighton-based Tru Thoughts label, who put out his international debut LP "Chapters". That, an appearance on Boiler Room TV last year, and support from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens have all helped this young man begin to garner attention. We are hoping this release for BBE will be the one that transforms him from a name bandied round by the electronic music cognoscenti, to a high-profile artist/producer.

Previously characterised as being a maker of downtempo beats, The Mawa EP is an altogether more upbeat affair. The opener rattles along with African tribal chants, dense percussion and a fuzzy near-analogue ambience; the African vibe is continued on track 2 with a looped marimba before we suddenly switch to some sparse, dreamy 4/4 stuff that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Nu-Groove way back when. The third track is altogether busier, interweaving more chanted vocal snippets and tinkling percussive figures over a sensuous bassline, and the closer increases the bottom-end action with some near sub-bass anchoring layers of shifting, swirling bleeps. This release puts Anchorsong firmly in ‘minimal’ territory and demands attention from electronic music DJs everywhere.

​First a producer that needs no introduction​,​ ​Appleblim kicks things off with ‘Phosphene’ - a glistening and pensive opener that drives a rubbery sequence under loose-limbed drum patterns. Next, ​o​ne half of PBR Streetgang, ​Bonar Bradberry​ follows up with ‘MOD’ - a languid, marching groove that perfectly soundtracks the embers of early doors and carries with it a beguiling quality.

On the flip, Ponty Mython follows up records on Dirt Crew, Swedish Brandy and Russia’s Capital Bass with the low-slung and highly danceable ‘Ruddy’s Loop’. Dissected jungle-esque drum breaks and a jazzy double bass line are melded together before Silver Bear and Percolate affiliates Krywald & Farrer blow some warm tropical air into the package with ‘Innacamo’. Jubilant African vocals and a heated, persistent bass line keep progress bustling forwards as Gottwax cap off another rich and varied offering adding another fine addition to their series.

Turbo Recordings is proud to present a release a full year in the making. A&R’d by Turbo Elder Thomas Von Party, Gender embodies the adventurous spirit of his own Multi Culti label, and marks a return to the kind of mega remix pack we used to make when the world was young and an alternate dub rework was all you needed to get by.

Germany’s Skinnerbox sets the template with a high-speed jungle rave banger, which is an accurate enough description but not something we would expect you to ever repeat out loud. The 12-inch also features versions by Swedish nice guy Axel Boman, who missed the submission deadline by 13 minutes but still managed to turn in a 12-minute epic jam, and Glasgow’s Auntie Flo, who somehow harnessed the siren song of the iPhone with a marimba-heavy mix.

As a digital bonus, we’ve included a massive trance weapon from Berlin legend Ellen Allien, with the understanding that you will spend the time it takes to download to reflect as hard as you can on the importance of equality and respect. All we are saying is give thinking what we tell you to think a chance.

MAPS is a project by a London-based Lithuanian drummer and producer, Marijus Aleksa. This labour of love is the culmination of many hours spent touring and in-session with some of the greats of London’s bubbling contemporary jazz scene, resulting in Marijus’s first solo project to date. The EP combines elements of jazz, afrobeat and electronic music through free-form jamming and remixing, with movement and the dance floor firmly in mind.

Musicians featured on the record have been playing and recording with likes of The Sun Ra Arkestra, Blue Lab Beats, Tony Allen, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Ibibio Sound Machine, Seun Kuti, Matthew Herbert and many others.

The record has received airplay and support from the likes of Bradley Zero, Marshmello, Aaron L and Ashley Henry to name but a few.

Following on from 'City Life' (Scissor And Thread #40) here is a brand new extended EP from composer, producer and musician Black Light Smoke, jam-packed  with pure raw House Music showcasing all the benefits of floating keys and rattling hi-hats, while masterfully interwoven vocal cuts take an infectious lead through the EP.

The title track 'Nothing Makes Me Feel (Good Anymore)' sets the tone with a snappy beat and a slightly melancholic vocal sample. 'Street Emotion' convinces with tasty dryness over a characteristic bass-wobble in the beginning before it opens up with a warm and swelling synth pad. 

In similar fashion 'Get Something' is beat-focused and dressed up with G-House vocal splinters which make it groovy as hell. 
'The Right Way' surfs on a wave of juicy chords and laid back vocals and especially the well-arranged break beat of 'The Right Way' creates the track's uniqueness. 

'Hustle' has some serious jack-flavor, transporting all the best of Chicago's warehouse sound while 'Golden Chains' is driven by a sophisticated garage bass-line, almost contrary to the emotional feel of the track, once more underlined by a distinctive vocal line. Well saturated distortion and Lo-Fi edges add up to a wealth of comfortably warm moods that represent Black Light Smoke's very personal expression of modern House sound, which you will be also be able top experience in his upcoming live set gigs.

Originally from Tokyo, and now based in London, Anchorsong AKA Masaaki Yoshida is a highly-fêted producer, and solo live act, renowned for crafting immersive and rhythmic releases.

Anchorsong has become globally recognised for his unique live shows, which spectators have described as “like watching a painter drawing on a white canvas”. He creates electronic music entirely live using an MPC2500 and keyboard, right in front of the audience. While he mainly performs solo, he frequently augments this setup with a string quartet, for a genuinely spellbinding show.
 Early on in his career, Anchorsong wowed the crowds at SXSW and found himself the subject of increased attention, going on to make several appearances on BBC Radio 1 with radio play from Rob Da Bank and a live Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens’ In New Music We Trust show in early 2010. Having put out three successful EPs in Japan, all of which were released as double packs containing a CD and a live DVD, Anchorsong’s international debut, ‘The Lost & Found EP’ was released on his own label, Case Study.
 Anchorsong signed to Tru Thoughts and released his single “Ghost Touch/Plum Rain” later that year, followed by his highly anticipated debut full-length album ‘Chapters’. He signed the seismic “Mawa” EP to BBE Recordings for a limited edition clear 10” vinyl release, taking a more element-laden, cut and paste approach with a renewed musical vision.

Masaaki dug deep into the roots of 70s African music on ‘Ceremonial’, while taking inspiration from 70s and 80s Bollywood film soundtracks and traditional Indian percussion on ‘Cohesion’ – a psychedelic, danceable and free-spirited listen that blurs rhythm and melody.

Praised by the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music/Worldwide FM), Karizma, Osunlade, Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and Craig Smith, Anchorsong has commanded support from BBC 6Music, being playlisted with his hit singles “Testimony” and “Expo”, ‘Ceremonial’ being hailed as Album of the Year (2016, 5th spot), and ‘Cohesion’ named Album of Day (2018). The unabashedly talented musician has achieved heavy press coverage from the likes of XLR8R, Clash, Magnetic Magazine, Pop Matters, Bandcamp Daily, NME Japan and Rolling Stone Japan, with print reviews from Q Magazine, DJ Mag, and Songlines (which named it as their ‘Top of the World’ album), and airplay across BBC Radio 1, BBC 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network, Worldwide FM, Radio X, FIP and KCRW.

‘Mirage’ is the fourth album from Anchorsong, a record that evokes hazy soundscapes constructed with wind instrumentals, choirs, and global sonic particles. Building on Anchorsong’s long-standing tradition of “borderless music”, ‘Mirage’ fuses intricate rhythms with minimal yet immersive lush interplays of sound to create an auditory odyssey. ‘Mirage’ marks a departure from Anchorsong’s previous two albums – ‘Ceremonial’ and ‘Cohesion’ – specific geographical references. Instead, the album which was half-written during lockdown and when nobody could travel, shows Masaaki internalise his global influences and worldview to conjure a “vague landscape that only exists in my mind”.
