This is my improvisational style, records grabbed last minute, some tracks never played before in a mix, some I barely knew bc I forgot or just bought, etc... all but one mix never done before (and the last time I did that one was prob 1999).... Why, though?? It's an outgrowth of attention issues, I leave shit to the last minute and like things to feel fresh or exciting... but over time, it's also become a matter a belief in one's vision and touch, a benefit of mastery and age, but also, of feeling as alive as possible in the moment.... Sometimes the result is nice, other times not... An upside of this style is that the present moment infuses the set, which highlights that it's a one of a kind experience never to be repeated .. but it's recorded... ooh, the irony... save that topic for later lol...

Our next 1984 guest DJ Marcelle has a similar "on the fly" approach, surely I was doubly inspired (inclined in the first place to book her for that, and last night felt it a bit more intentional)!

Emerging from the depths of the Minneapolis underground scene, The Worm is one of the best underground techno duos in the US, composed of midwest stalwarts Naughty Wood and Heckadecimal. Naughty Wood brings decades of experience, including collaborations on Traxx’s esteemed Chicago imprint Nation. The machine wizard known as Heckadecimal boasts a deep catalog with releases spanning Always Human Tapes and Great Circles. In early 2016, the mysterious tape-duplicator Ryan Wurst received some demos, which soon became The Worm, a very rare and limited cassette on Always Human Tapes. In April of that year, The Worm flew to Denver to perform live at a basement rave co-hosted by Deep Club and Always Human Tapes, at which Traxx also delivered a DJ set. The Worm’s sound was minted in Ryan Scannura’s brain.

Fast forward 8 years, and Ryan S. saw it time for two absolutely mental tracks from the AHT cassette to finally be pressed to wax, together with two other cuts. The A-side kicks off with “12 Days Of Squirm,” a deep, pulsating acid earworm that builds in intensity. “LISA” could almost be an outtake from a lost Nation session. The tune melds haunting melodies with a demented beat, sure to scare off most casual diggers. Deep Club presents two new-old tracks on side B. “808 Verb Talk” is a slimy, wiggly mix in the vein of 12 Days. Finally, “Pytch1” brings the energy down in an extended, slow-burning closer. Eight years and two Ryans later, this collection is finally ready for turntables in living rooms and foggy basements around the world. Only for the most devoted midwest techno warriors!

Andrew Weatherall's first official posthumous mix. The only b2b DJ Harvey ever agreed to. Six hours at Trouw. This one's special.

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. It's exciting to finally have Max G contribute to the Ancient Puzzle Arts mix series. I have known Max since high school and we have kept up with each other off and on ever since. You could make the argument that Ancient Puzzle Arts would not exist without Max G, because he was the first person to introduce me to the deeper side of dance music, specifically introducing me to DJ Harvey, Theo Parrish and Audion. I got hooked on exchanging CDs with Max early on, but it wasn't until I went to Detroit Movement Festival in 2009 with him that I became as thoroughly committed to dance music as I am today. There were a lot of partying highlights between Max G and me over the years, but one particular night seeing Robag Wruhme in Detroit certainly influenced both of our music production styles to this day.

Max G is a long time veteran of dance music, both record collecting and attending various events around the East Coast, but it was only recently did he finally unload his impressive collection of music production and video installation art to the public. Max G, in addition to being a prolific and excellent music producer, is also an incredible visual artist. You can see his synesthetic blend of audio and visuals over on his website ( https://www.maxgroff.com/ ).

For this month's mix, Max G contributed an entire mix of all original productions. Expect deep grooves, dirty bass kicks, anxiety, euphoria, and an overall hypnotic trip via synthesis.
