I spent the first half of 2014 traveling between my new home in Hong Kong and my parents home in the UK near the port of Harwich.  I was struck by the constant flow of massive ships linking these two worlds over centuries. This track captures that sense of oceanic journey and global connection, blending orchestral textures with a mellow trip hop groove and the ethereal sound of the theremin.

Perfect for relaxing, studying, or unwinding to a calming instrumental soundscape.

Natural philosophy was the philosophical study of nature and the physical universe that was dominant before the development of modern science in the 19th century. 

It included the study of astronomy and cosmology, the study of nature the elements; the study of matter, and the philosophy of space and time. In this case I was thinking particularly of the study of air and the discoveries of the gasses that make up the atmosphere.

Perfect for focused contemplation, historical daydreams, or simply immersing yourself in a soundscape that bridges art and early scientific thought.

I knew when I gave this track to Erika that she would do something amazing. I didn't give her any brief or any comments on what she did. So the end result is nearly all her. She did an incredible job with the production, arrangement, guitars, drums and vocals. Big love too to headcharge777 for the superb bass. I'm very happy that my vocal and little bit of guitar playing made it to the mixdown too.

The title and idea comes from "Six Records of a Floating Life", an autobiography by Shen Fu a Qing Dynasty official. Shen's life is kind of up and down, but he believes that there is beauty to be found everywhere and that appreciating life's journey is more important than conforming to societal expectations – a sentiment that deeply resonates with the musician's path.

This track blends melodies played on the Chinese zither with chill, ambient soundscapes and classical influences, creating a reflective and gently uplifting listening experience bringing serenity and embracing the beauty of impermanence.

Fivos Valachis - Colour Your Life Orange - in aid of Medecines Sans Frontier (An Di Yi Remix)

Written soon after I moved to Hong Kong last year, this one was sparked off by the sounds of insects I recorded on my phone as I walked down towards the city centre from The Peak. The urgent challenging rhythm, combines with slower more majestic sections ambient soundscapes and found sounds from the forest and the crowded city streets to reflect how I feel about this amazing city.

City In The Clouds - Hong Kong - Hangdrum - Percussion

One of my last Beijing songs. I was back in the city staying with friends after we had moved to Hong Kong. They lived in a local residential compound, and one morning while I was still lying in bed I heard the unmistakable sounds of the itinerant knife sharpener. One of the last traditional street cries, his call is highly distinctive and finished off with the unmissable sound of him scraping his tools on a hard surface.

So I turned on the zoom and got a reasonable recording out of the window. It became the foundation of this homage to Beijing's residential compounds and hutongs where the pace of the old city lingers on amidst the burgeoning development.

Beijing Blades - Ambience - Trip Hop - Guzheng

Ride with An Di Yi to the sacred slopes of Kawa Karpo, a holy mountain on the border of Tibet and Yunnan, China. With a soundbed recorded whilst riding on a mule following a pristine mountain stream, whose bed is adorned with thousands of stone prayer stacks made by pilgrims on their spiritual journey, and yaks grazing peacefully nearby. The gentle, rhythmic mule bells set the pace for music reflecting the serenity, vastness and spirituality of this magical land in an ambient soundscape for moments of quiet reflection and peace.

Gentle piano melodies and chill hop beats blend with the hypnotic sound of the rain, evoking an atmospheric and introspective chill hop mood for rainy days, relaxation, or focused listening.

The atlases and OS maps of my childhood held me totally enthralled. Places seemingly impossibly far away, described only by a name, a colour and hint of mountains. Now that the world is so more accessible, that mystery has gone. Replaced by the incredible possibilities of the cross fertilisation of cultures and feelings in our interconnected world. This is the music of geography.
