To introduce @janefitz as a legend of the scene borders on understatement. The UK selector has earned an almost cult-like following born out of her annual sets at Freerotation festival, co-founding London’s Night Moves parties (with good friend Jade Seatle - @jade-green), a more recent residency at revered club the Pickle Factory, a monthly show on @rinsefm, and a pre-pandemic touring schedule that took in countless clubs and festivals the world over. She herself admits to being committed to the scene for life, driven by a deep appreciation of the music above all else – and a constant desire to surprise both herself and her audience equally.

For her Patterns of Perception 82, Jane has recreated some of the warmth she felt during her visit to Berlin for a b2b with Eric Cloutier (@cloutier) at our party in November 2019, an event which remains a vivid memory on both sides. The mix features many records collected over the past year of the pandemic and not yet played out, giving it a sense of urgency and an uplifting quality that, for her, recalls an outdoor festival set in better days. “A bit of me was kind of longing for playing on the side of a Japanese mountain again or for all those festivals you do in the summer,” she says. “I wanted to have people stomping on a forest floor.”

Patterns of Perception 82 - Jane Fitz

Svreca needs little introduction. The Semantica label head has carved out a reputation in his hometown, Madrid, and internationally as a master of deep, hypnotic, forward-thinking techno.

For our One Year celebration at ://aboutblank in Berlin in May 2017, he held us spellbound under the glow of the late-spring sun with this luminescent mix of colours, textures, and sounds.

We are very excited to present the live recording of this set as the latest installation in our mix series.

Patterns of Perception 19 - Svreca

Long-time resident of The Labyrinth (Japan, @mindgameslaby), Hiyoshi’s vivid, contemplative ambient mixes draw together musical elements from a diversity of sources, yet retain a rare purity of emotion and atmosphere.

With Patterns of Perception 33 Hiyoshi aims to capture the essence of his most affecting sets of the past year, including at Sound Garden, Labyrinth, and One party, while also paying respect to friends and artists who’ve mentored and supported him.

The result is a lucid, ethereal selection, a dance in the diffuse sunlight, on the surface of the lake, always hinting at the depths below.

Patterns of Perception 33 - Hiyoshi

Josef Gaard (@josefgaard) is a project focused on music as a conduit. Originally based in the Seattle area and now settled in Berlin, he has been sharing his salient sound through productions and performances for years. With a 12" coming up on @kalawila ’s Mountain Explosion Device, he is continuing to push his music forward with a distinct touch. This mix showcases the different edges of his musical sphere, from nordic house to electro to techno and back again.

This Thursday 2 August he plays at OHM alongside the special live debut of Acronym (@4cr0nym) & @kali-malone.

Patterns of Perception 36 - Josef Gaard

Chris SSG needs little introduction. As co-founder of the hugely influential (former) MNML SSGS blog and now organiser of MNML SSGS events, he has for years been at the cutting edge of electronic music in his hometown of Tokyo and abroad. Eschewing conventional dancefloor sensibilities, his music moves effortlessly between ambient, experimental, komische and abstract techno.

His Patterns of Perception 39 is a journey through a range of his current musical foci, and was recorded live at @dredrecordsberlin 's Space Cakes event on 12 August 2018, drawing from an emotional palate inspired by the summer in which it was recorded.

Patterns of Perception 39 - Chris SSG

Sidney & Suleiman’s musical explorations – both as DJs and as founders of Paris-based Latency Recordings – traverse a rich tapestry of genres, moods, and sounds. Their distinctive combination of these elements places the label at the forefront of aurally diverse electronic music for both dancing and listening.

Patterns of Perception 40 reflects the keen and subtle musical sensibilities of the duo, drifting between and around ambient, experimental and techno, always remaining true to its creators’ unique musical vision.

Since first playing at the second Patterns of Perception back in 2016, techno veteran @yuka, has bestowed a special beat upon Patterns of Perception’s heart.

With interests that span painting, sculpture, design and music, Yuka’s unique groove – which is as deep and psychedelic as it is lucent and energetic – has captivated dancers across the globe. Meanwhile, her productions, out on @fullpanda-records, @semantica-records, @silent-season and soon on @kalawila's Mountain Explosion Device are ornate, magical, and profound.

Her Patterns of Perception 41 perfectly captures the rich threads in her musical tapestry.

Essē began his journey in electronic music around the beginning of 2000’s. Experimenting as a Dj he developed an interest for Techno and Minimal. In 2009 the Sardinian artist moved to Milan where he began his career in the world of sound engineering. Essē’s knowledge in music, production and techniques pushed him to start his own electronic musical project. As an artist, he is always looking to refine his technical and creative skills, through a constant research focusing on clear Techno aesthetics, through ambiental and hypnotic sounds with influences from dub and minimal.

He has released music for labels such as Circular Limited, Black Chrysalis Archives and Forevergreen LTD FM & LTD. He also recently joined Astrale AM, an independent agency and collective platform focused on exploring modern hypnotic soundscapes.

As a co-curator and resident DJ of Patterns of Perception, Steve Duncan aims to always infuse a sense of vibrancy and diversity into the sonic palette of his sets and musical offerings. A focus on rhythm and narrative allows him to traverse a range of sounds and moods, and challenges him to continually dig and refine his musical vision.

With Patterns of Perception 42 - his second outing since the very first edition some two and half years ago - Steve has created a soundscape filled with slow grooves, rough textures and vibrant interjections. It seeks to bridge home listening and dancefloor sensibilities, with driving moments countered with contemplative experimental pieces.

Patterns of Perception 42 - Steve Duncan

@eluize is many things: a producer, DJ, and label head, whose passions over the years have ranged from maths to (more recently) motherhood - both of which and more she discusses in an upcoming interview with us. Her label, Night Tide (@nighttideaudio), whose mission is deep melodic underground electronic music, has released music from @albrecht-labrooy, @djenacosovic, and @hans-berg.

Based in Berlin but with a foot still firmly grounded in her hometown of Adelaide, Eluize’s productions and mixes span techno, house, acid and more, fuse acoustic instrumentation with synths and machines, creating textures that are spacious, euphoric and rhythmically alluring.

Her Patterns of Perception 43 is at once precise, vivid and lush, a perfect antidote to the gathering darkness of Berlin’s coming winter.

A Sacred Geometry started his self-titled label in 2015 with the intention to create a symbiotic environment, involving sounds and artworks within their physical media.
Initially a duo, the musical project is now run by Nicolò Papini, following the path traced during these years. Dripping in resonance, A Sacred Geometry creates a mesmeric ambient reality sculpted by space and textures. Layers of ethereal melody and rhythmic pulsation enforce the importance of the atmosphere and dynamism going within his work.

Konduku (a.k.a. Ruben Üvez) burst onto the scene in 2018 with his debut album Kıran, named after the picturesque hill in Turkey's Cappadocia under which his father is buried. That man and that place are in many ways the inspiration behind this unique artist's arresting blending of atmospheric melodica and polyrhythmic drive, grounded in equal measure upon the mystifying beauty of his ancestral home and the thrilling electronic music scene of the Netherlands in which he was raised.

His Patterns of Perception 46 perfectly reflects these dual complementary forces, at once arcane and palpable. And perhaps the third vital foundation upon which this mix's incandescent energy stands is the process by which it was created: two turntables, one take.

Patterns of Perception 46 - Konduku

With a penchant for subtle groove and emotive shifts between genres, Kia’s sound centres itself around bass, IDM and the deeper reaches of techno.

As a member of Melbourne’s burgeoning electronic music community, she showcases the talent shown by friends and other figures within the local scene through the careful selections of which her mixes are comprised.

With Patterns of Perception 48, Kia weaves a smooth, coherent narrative that effortlessly blends shades of dub and minimal techno, whilst also providing an inspired down-tempo exploration of contemporary bass music. Warmth, nostalgia and sincerity are elements that can be felt keenly throughout the mix, and are indicative of the positivity that permeates through Kia’s musical vision.

Alexander Berg and Robin Jonsson – best known by their monikers Dorisburg (@alexanderberg) and @kalawila – have been friends for a decade but collaborators for barely a moment. What has emerged so far from this is quite something: rhythmic yet immersive, capricious yet lucid, Avancera is the electronic sound of tomorrow.

Driven to create music that combines their two unique spheres of inspiration, yet exists in a single, almost-mythical universe, Avancera demonstrates what can result when virtuoso visions collide, combine, and ultimately synchronise.

This very special Patterns of Perception 52 precedes Avancera’s world-first performance at Patterns of Perception on 28 June at OHM Berlin.

Patterns of Perception 52 - Avancera (Dorisburg & Kalawila)

Hailing from Gothenburg, @Arkajo a.k.a. Nils Krogh has risen to prominence through consistently superb output, both in his own right and as one half of Genius of Time, the moniker he shares with close friend and long-time collaborator Dorisburg (@alexanderberg). Having already released essential cuts on @aniara-recordings and @clone-nl 's Royal Oak imprint, his own ARKAJO label recently put out a joint EP, Void Pyramid, featuring both him and Dorisburg at their evocative and rhythmic best.

Patterns of Perception 54 perfectly encapsulates the artist’s deep, emotive and irresistibly groove-laden sound, which expertly joins together elements of house, acid and breaks with his own unique vision of techno.

Patterns of Perception 54 - Arkajo

Growing up in the countryside of the Netherlands, Matthijs Verschuure found himself surrounded by endless polder horizons, green fields and the sea. It didn’t take long however for @mattheis to find his residence in the industrial harbour town of Rotterdam, where he further developed his synthesizer explorations and crafted his propulsive, hypnotic sound.

The @nousklaeraudio mainstay signed his first release “Isms” with the label in early 2013, followed by a handful of EP’s, remixes and two studio-albums; “Kindred Phenomena” (2016) and “Thin Sections” (2018). His most recent works include collaborations with French label @ahrperecords founder Amandra (@amandraaa), plus a solo EP “A Falcon’s Eyrie” (2020).

Mattheis' Patterns of Perception 61 expands on his modus operandi in the studio, featuring rolling waves of insistent rhythms drenched in a deep ambience of atmospheric sounds, with a focus on subtle changes serving the greater whole of the recording.

Woody92’s (@woodyninetytwo) upbringing in Delft, wedged between the much-larger and musically more iconic cities of Rotterdam and The Hague, gave him  glimpses of psychedelic techno, mystical ambient, free tribal tekno, push-forward goa and psy-trance that influenced his musical development, while also allowing him the space to grow and explore on his own musical terms. Now a respected DJ at home and abroad, his ability to capture an audience while remaining true to his experimental dispositions is unparalleled and unwavering. Meanwhile, his visual art and fashion studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague have sharpened a visual aesthetic that runs in parallel with his musical development, going some way to explaining the rich visual imagery that his musical work is able to generate. 

With residencies at Garage Noord and, before it sadly closed its doors earlier this year, De School, Woody92 has left a deep mark on the Dutch underground scene, thanks to his truly unique syntheses of the meditative, tribal, transcendental, and trippy. All of these influences can be heard (and perhaps – if you close your eyes – seen) in his Patterns of Perception 68, with its deep and glitchy rhythms combining with trippy and more experimental sounds to create a deeply intelligent and intricately arranged selection, bridging textured experimental with propulsive techno, breaks and beyond.

Patterns of Perception 68 - Woody92

@myles-mac is perhaps best known as co-founder and curator of trusted electronic music platform and mix series @melbourne-deepcast, but his list of credentials stretches much longer than that. A fixture of Melbourne’s underground for the past decade, Myles has cemented his reputation as a respected DJ and curator through both Melbourne Deepcast and his famed Lost Weekend club nights. His eclectic and diverse selections - both as an individual DJ and as one half of the 90s house duo Project 95 (@proj95) - have meanwhile earned him space on lineups across Australia and overseas. 

While Myles, like many of us, has found a sense of calm in downtempo and ambient music the last few months, in his Patterns of Perception 75 he switches gears. Here, Myles seamlessly fuses some of his favourite fast, spacey techno and energised broken rhythms with moments of pure, atmospheric euphoria. The resulting hour and a half feels like a triumphant return to the club: offering both a brief escape from our current moment and a much needed reminder of the energy that can only be created by a dance floor in full flow.
