"Bats" was composed for the "We need a voice" compilation, created by AZH Promo based in Kiev, Ukraine. The compilation's goal is to spread awareness about the political and social situation in that country.

Even though  Ukraine belongs to Europe geographically, it has little in common with the rest of the continent - with the omnipresent oppression of the political opposition, corruption, as well as violence and kidnapings of those who stand against the government. The people of Ukraine need our support - a song is nearly not enough...

Based in Californian Humboldt County, Brian Pyle wanders the world on his countless travels. Far from being restless, he has his very own Pylesque way of travelling. Much like a Lynchian version of Hemingway, he has an eye for the thin layer between restlessness and relaxation, gloom and serenity. Wherever he goes, he ardently absorbes these nuances, rarefies them and moulds them into a seamless array of glimmering styles, from drone and ambient to shoegaze and post-wave, giving birth to yet another creation of his prolific Ensemble Economique project.
On his by now eleventh album and fourth Denovali release "Blossoms In Red", Pyle combines and perfects elements of his previous output into a cohesive narrative. The opener "From The Train Window, Red Flowers On The Mountain" is a surprisingly scarce ambient piece, which feels like an almost infinitely stretched precious moment of time. Despite being austere, it is warm, sublime and incredibly captivating and after listening to its full 8 minutes, one cannot help but to rewind and replay. Having barely escaped this seductively infinite loop, one encounters the title track "Blossoms In Red" featuring Portland electronic duo Soft Metals. Starting off with a characteristic sluggish programmed beat, one is immediately overpowered by the onset of the towering combination of a warm bassline and a shimmering synth ambience. As the track flows, these elements writhe around each other in a delicately beautiful fashion, absorbing the materialising wailing guitar which almost sounds like an ethereal voice, as well as the occasional melodic and rhythmic accents. The next track sees this guitar return in a rather pure form. "On The Sand", featuring jack-of-all-trades Peter Broderick, is essentially just reduced analogue drums, electric guitar, a simple vibrating bassline and hoarse almost spoken vocals. Slowly and methodically, these constituents form a captivating erotic ritual, much like a beguiling and hypnotic mandala procession of imperturbable blissful individuals on the beach. As proven on numerous occasions, Pyle can easily lead all his trumps in the presence of female lead vocals, and "Blossoms In Red" makes no exception. Indeed, "You, By Candlelight" is easily the best Ensemble Economique track with female vox to date. Pyle manages to embed the vocals just in the right minimal amount of instrumental layers, making the track radiate an elusive tranquility. The fifth and closing track "Nothing Is Perfect" is a classically tinged piano piece with only very little processing and sparse field recording samples. With all pieces of the album, Pyle manages to create tracks which feel like being composed only of two or three layers of sound, that are nevertheless allowed to develop a life cycle which seems incredibly long - track lengths vary from 6:30 to 8:10 - but still feels just right. Thus "Blossoms In Red" is probably Ensemble Economique's most minimalistic album, but at the same time - or maybe just for this reason - his most skilled work.

Magdalene Flowers is a project of Alex Bober - a sound artist, photographer and graphic designer. 
For Alex main sources of inspiration are nostalgia, childhood memories, escapism and power of imagination. His music is a way of expressing indescribable feelings and emotions which are half-subconscious and almost vivid in their intimacy. His music tells a story of self-hatred, slowly and pleasurably destroying an individual from the inside, childhood memories projected on everyday existence and drowning sorrow in contemplation of the simple and beautiful.

Taken from the upcoming album 'Little Things' by Dalot & Sound Awakener...

'Little Things' is the first full length collaboration between Vietnamese sound artist Nhung Nguyen (Sound Awakener) and Greek sound artist Maria Papadomanolaki (Dalot). The album marks the completion of a 1.5 year-long exploration of common threads and interests between the two artists most notably the quotidian, the minute and the unnoticed often found in the fringes of big cities, busy landscapes and trajectories. It starts from ground-level interactions, field recordings of soundwalks in parks, on the streets, hydrophones in rivers and contact microphones on bridges and delicately moves to the ethereal; building up atmospheres of dreamsequences that differ from track to track. 

‘Little things’ was created by a process of exchange and extraction of draft ideas between the two artists. The creative and personal connection was deep which results in a sense of intuition and mystery throughout the album. Each track has undergone iterative transformations until its final stage, with each artist peeling off layers and sculpting textures and moods prompted by words, memories and places. While, ‘Strangers in the city’ places the listeners in an urban junction, still with their eyes closed, ‘all that fall’ contemplates on the beauty of fallen leaves, autumnal afternoons and the smell of rain. In pieces like ‘a good day to be alone’ the two artists create feather-like motions resembling invisible drizzles of emotions, solitude and dreams filling up an empty, quiet room on a sunny morning. Elsewhere in the album, as in ‘sailing’, darkness supersedes lightness in a long dive into unknown waters. 

The album creates a journey for the listener; a journey of changes between the two artists’ lives; the changes in seasons, life-events, ordinary moments  and creative processes that affected the perspectives and emotional states within which this album was produced. Rainer Maria Rilke has written that ‘the only journey is the one within’. In ‘Little Things’ the two artists offer an adventurous exploration of internal landscapes through sound and memory, the light and shadow encountered within. Nguyen and Papadomanolaki embark in a musical dialogue in an effort to create a new common dialect between them, a place where they can feel both familiar and lost.

"E Quindi Uscimmo A Riveder Le Stelle" is the very last piece on a six-track release by Frédéric D. Oberland, titled Labyrinth, for his very own NAHAL Recordings, a label whose ownership he shares with Paul Régimbeau (aka Mondkopf). The imprint itself takes its name from a mythological labyrinthian diagram hiding a map of the path to the new world. This is only a third release for the French label, and we can already get a taste of all the eerie things to come. And if you're already a fan of Oberland and his past works as Oiseaux-Tempête, then you're in for a treat...

Dark and noisy, the track begins as a continuation from its predecessor, “La Part Du Feu”, which built up into this distorted explosive opening, the whispers still guiding you deeper inside, as you explore its layers of pitched down percussion, harmonic pipe, and dark energy, with which this multi-instrumentalist courses your path. This downward spiral is not accidental, as Oberland meticulously paints “a vertiginous dive into George Bataille‘s ‘Inner Experience’ and the cave of Dante’s ‘Inferno'”.

"A condensed version of a sound and visual installation created in the basement of the contemporary art space Labanque in Béthune, “Labyrinth” invites us to bear witness to the loss of landmarks and to feel the immersive sense of trance […] In a continuous game of call and response between the intimate and the vast, ‘Labyrinth’ plays with the dynamics, the silence and the musical genres, kneading and pulling the form and structure of the tracks in ever-changing attempts towards transfiguring the chaos."

The album is out this Friday, October 26th, available as a digital release and a beautiful vinyl pressing. Constructed over 2 years this album has been slowly pieced together, reshaped, scraped, re-written and made again before becoming the album you are listening to now.

Replicas’ is a dark journey into a past, present and future that is personal, and reflective of wider concerns shaping this island(s) we live on.

At points angry and born out of frustration and angst for the times we are living in, this album goes back to my roots; a council flat in South East London, freedom, degradation, concrete, community, rich, poor, the melting pot of cultures, music, and people.

As cultural lines have been drawn in a different way through gentrification, a poverty divide similar to those of the 80’s and the b word, I have found myself struggling to accept my own place as a working class composer, father and human.

This album I suppose you could say is a meditation on the urban sprawl I grew up in, getting older, and my place in a community that feels like it has lost its way. - GW
