While fighting words and obscenity are unprotected forms of speech, it brings in a special gray area into the realm of art. At times, visual art asks us to question what we define as fighting words and obscene, pushing the norms of how far the mind should accept art. What happens when an artist tries something new and maybe goes too far? Historically, there’s pushback, and then, censorship.
