Sound Art piece for Studio Akustische Kunst of WDR, editor: Klaus Schöning, first broadcast: 18th November 2000. Awarded the Prix Ars Acustica 2000. 
This is a shorter Mix of the original composition. 
"dripping introduces the listener to imaginary rooms, whose physical structures are made tangible by the composition of droplets generating sound. The droplets can be thought of as being the echoes of a location system, which gives the listener access to a whole microcosm of almost unperceivable sounds from the perspective of an insect. The initially irregular dripping sounds describe a path through a "virtual" soundscape of various different material consistencies. They then begin adopting rhythmic patterns that create a hypnotic atmosphere as a result of their combined repetition and nuanced fluctuation."

"The desert, a landscape reduced to the most fundamental and primordial components, a place for introspection, is the starting point of windscapes. In all its breathtaking beauty and simplicity, the desert represents the epitome of a landscape sculpted by the wind. The sea of dunes and the aeolian modulation of the sand remind us of the empty vastness of the ocean, whose silent waves of sand are continually being shaped by the wind to create sheer infinite diversity. The flowing shapes and patterns of sand seem to go on endlessly like time – which itself has been measured using sand since time immemorial."

"The sound compositions fire pattern (2007) and frost pattern (2006) describe the extremes of hot and cold. Almost identical in terms of their formal structure, the twin pieces reflect the acoustic impact of the energies unleashed by fire and ice, from the loudest sound event in each case – the eruption of a volcano and the collision of an iceberg – through to cooling or melting in a more moderate temperature range."

Frost Pattern

A composition for the relaunch of the SilenceRadio.org website on May 1, 2010.

In March 2010 the Belgian internet radio SilenceRadio.org asked me to compose a piece for the relaunch of their website. At that time I was interested in how sounds could be mirrored in other sounds and how the meaning of sounds shifts depending on context. The title of the piece – “A Pot Calling The Kettle Black” – is an old English phrase already found in works by Cervantes and Shakespeare that is still used today to refer to hypocrisy. The idiom can be interpreted as follows: A pot is sooty from being placed on an open fire, while a kettle, being placed on coals, remains clean and shiny. The pot only sees its own sooty reflection in the shiny surface of the kettle and accuses it of being black, a property that only belongs to the pot itself. In this composition, sounds refer to and reflect each other in a similar manner. The action is transposed from a medieval fireplace to a contemporary household, and many sounds deal with activities set in a kitchen: frying eggs, drinking mineral water, making a cup of tea or cleaning the dishes. Sounds of water and fire, of heating and burning, of immersion and draining appear in many variations. The sounds are orchestrated by a woman who is inspired to vocal experiments by her daily routines. The kitchen noises turn into abstract sound worlds which may arise from her imagination and memory – but perhaps they are just sounds that have been released from their chemical bond with a specific meaning and which, when heated, recombine to form new molecular structures.

"The clock is one of the most important technical developments of humankind. Few other inventions have had such a shaping influence on our everyday life. The clock’s proverbial ticking is deeply ingrained in our consciousness. It marked time for industrialisation and scientific progress, as well as being the first mechanical musical instrument, preparing our rhythmic understanding for the machinelike precision of modern music. In chronostasis, the sound of time becomes audible via the many-voiced ticking of a whole array of antique clocks. The simplest rhythmic information, the pendular motion of a clock mechanism, gives rise to a complex tangle of overlapping patterns and pulses. For a moment, in the ritual of constant repetition, time seems to stand still. (The term ”chronostasis“ refers to a perceptual illusion that causes the second hand of a clock to appear to stand still for a moment. Apparently, when the gaze moves quickly to a clock face, the mind prolongs its perception of that initial moment beyond what is actually seen.)"

a mix of a 1999 production, sound sources are exclusively crickets and frogs, was broadcasted at several radio stations. The subject of crickets, cicadas and frogs keep me going: in the meantime, I collected loads of new material around the world and there will be a new version of the piece later this year (much less based on steady beats than floating drifting rhythms as found in nature...)

this is one of my favourite field recordings, pure magic: I made this unedited recording on a canoe ride down the river cano negro in Costa Rica, passing through the mangroves with howler monkeys giving their calls that are reflected by the water surface. on the other side of the river spider monkeys climb through the trees and the Oropendola bird is singing his song. later a caiman jumps into the water.

Der Goldene Handschuh

I made this sound recording of a frozen lake in the winter of 2005/06 in the area around Berlin. Frozen lakes are known to give off most noise during major fluctuations in temperature: the ice expands or contracts, and the resulting tension in the ice causes cracks to appear. Due to the changes in temperature, the hours of morning and evening are usually the best times to hear these sounds. In my experience, thin ice is especially interesting for acoustic phenomena; it is more elastic and sounds are propagated better across the surface. Snowfall, on the other hand, has a muffling effect and the sound can only travel to a limited extent. The ice sheet acts as a huge membrane across which the cracking and popping sounds spread. Underwater microphones proved especially well-suited for these recordings: in a small hole drilled close beneath the surface of the water, the sounds emitted by the body of ice carry particularly well. The most striking thing about these recordings is the synthetic-sounding descending tones caused by the phenomenon of the dispersion of sound waves. The high frequencies of the popping and cracking noises are transmitted faster by the ice than the deeper frequencies, which reach the listener with a time lag as glissandi sinking to almost bottomless depths.

Honey Scene (Excerpt)

“Eolo” is the Italian name for Aeolus, the ruler of the wind in Greek mythology. On the Spanish Island La Palma, part of the Canary Islands, trade winds carry a constant stream of clouds over the steep mountains and volcanos of the inland, forcing the clouds into erratic movements. Time lapse recordings of those cloud movements are set against a vocal canon sang by German singer Almut Kühne.
