I made this sound recording of a frozen lake in the winter of 2005/06 in the area around Berlin. Frozen lakes are known to give off most noise during major fluctuations in temperature: the ice expands or contracts, and the resulting tension in the ice causes cracks to appear. Due to the changes in temperature, the hours of morning and evening are usually the best times to hear these sounds. In my experience, thin ice is especially interesting for acoustic phenomena; it is more elastic and sounds are propagated better across the surface. Snowfall, on the other hand, has a muffling effect and the sound can only travel to a limited extent. The ice sheet acts as a huge membrane across which the cracking and popping sounds spread. Underwater microphones proved especially well-suited for these recordings: in a small hole drilled close beneath the surface of the water, the sounds emitted by the body of ice carry particularly well. The most striking thing about these recordings is the synthetic-sounding descending tones caused by the phenomenon of the dispersion of sound waves. The high frequencies of the popping and cracking noises are transmitted faster by the ice than the deeper frequencies, which reach the listener with a time lag as glissandi sinking to almost bottomless depths.

Other Joe’s ‘Jealousy Tulip’ arrives in stasis - as if suspended in mid-air. No longer rising but not yet falling.

After contributing a piece to our Stay In Bed Vol. II compilation we proudly present the latest EP from the .jpeg Artefacts label head, a hazy five tracker built on swirling loops, murky textures and playful motifs.   Joe’s EP is comprised of loops made in a single day and ruminated over long walks. Large project files and overloaded effect racks caused the renders of each file to take on a slightly different flavour each time they were exported. We’ve dubbed this precarious workflow “CPU Jazz”.

Within these uneasy and at times disconcerting sonic textures there are hopeful melodies and rhythms that cut through the fog, suggesting an idyllic spring that is just out of reach. Let your ear hold onto these moments and use them as a key to open you up to the meditative garden of the Jealousy Tulip.

"Performative lecture” - mix of talk & concert - on sound practice, audio production, accelerationist feminism, language, speculative realities of being an artist under ad-driven surveillance imperialism w open Q&A.

AGF
German artist AGF aka Antye Greie-Ripatti a sonic ninja and electronic music producer. Her work inhabits an augmented space where pounding Berlin experimental techno, spoken word, abstract video art, feminism and radical ecology create a self-sustaining environment. Originally from East Germany, she started to develop a DIY approach early on, while also using her voice to fight against oppression by supporting marginalized communities and calling out injustice, most recently through female:pressure, a support community and promotional platform for female-identified electronic musicians. Currently based in Northern Finland, Antye founded the local arts organization Hai Art in Hailuoto. Since its inception in 2011, Hai Art has been involved in numerous sound-related projects, focusing on working with children. Antye acts as its director, curator and workshop instructor. Active since the early 90's, she has collaborated with strong names in electronic music such as French pioneer Eliane Radigue, German legends Gudrun Gut and Ellen Allien, British avantgardist Kaffe Matthews, Finnish IDM treasure Vladislav Delay and classical composer Craig Armstrong.
