When I started Headstash Music I was happily surprised to see this playlist become the most well-liked. Today's young composers are taking classical music in a whole new direction, using more effects on their instruments, looping and adding subtle electronic textures to the production. I wanted to respect the original sound as well, so there is also quite a bit of music on here that follows a more standard format....enjoy

After meeting at SXSW in 2011 Juice and David kept in contact about possibly working together, but getting together is difficult for artists who are busy with their own projects, particularly if one is based in the Far East. Finally in 2013, during a couple of short trips back, David gathered the group in his home town of Otley to spend a few hours recording. 

The album spans the hymnal to human beatbox, discord to angelic harmony, with lyrical themes displaying the weaknesses of men, via rural imagery and sombre love songs, to the decline of northern industry and pub brawls. David had some basic ideas; Juice had no idea what they would be faced with. After some short discussion and a little practise the part-improvised tracks were recorded live in one take and kept sparse, underpinned by David's gentle and often imprecise guitar playing as the accompaniment to four voices.

David Thomas Broughton occupies a contentious position, divides opinion, unsettles, is self-consciously clumsy, hilarious, beautiful but above all memorable.  Walls of noise and layers of beauty interweave and delight at every turn. Many people use loops these days. Broughton includes the glitches, mistakes, and the resulting comedy in his act, works with what he has, and moves on. Broughton writes songs of beauty, with classic themes of love, pain, hurt, suicide, depression, teenage angst etc… It’s just they come out with a comedic twist and are rarely reproduced in a live setting as they are heard on record.

Juice Vocal Ensemble are an experimental vocal trio who explore new a cappella music that defies genre. They’ll do anything from ethereal, stratospheric classical sounds to spooky bluegrass, beatboxing to hollering. They have performed fiendish avant-garde pieces by the likes of John Zorn, Meredith Monk and Morton Feldman, but also turn their hand to inventive covers of Guns ‘n’ Roses, Kraftwerk and Rihanna.
They have commissioned and performed work by composers including Gavin Bryars, Shlomo, Mica Levi (aka Micachu from Micachu and The Shapes), Anna Meredith and award-winning folk artist Jim Moray.

During the early stages of writing the script for 30 Grader i Februari (30 Degrees in February), I listened to ASS and Tape a great deal but hadn't given much thought at the time as to who was to compose the soundtrack.

With four different directors, three photographers, and a number of episode writers, it quickly became clear that music would have an extremely significant role in creating the continuity we were after; a collision between East and West, Thailand and Sweden, heat, humour and tragedy.

I was thrilled that Andreas Söderström and Johan Berthling were keen to compose the soundtrack to the drama series. We talked early on about creating a suitable atmosphere that landed somewhere between Thai Luuk Thung and Swedish folk music. It was also important that the music contributed to moving things forward, right through to the approaching storm at the end.

In a film setting, where music is often created with the synths and the occasional electric guitar, it was amazing to experience Johan and Andreas' music, which was composed exclusively using acoustic instruments, some of them home made, others imported from Southeast Asia.

When things fall into place, you tend to see it much later. This time was no exception. The hours we spent in the studio have been some of my happiest and most fulfilling moments during the two and a half years of work on 30 Grader i Februari.

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. 

After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. It was a release from “having to write lyrics or involve my voice,” he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being. 

Reviews of Gitkin’s first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. 

Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient. 

Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica (“Cat Nip”) to raunchy roadhouse stompers (“Fools Gold” and “The Drive”) to dreamy vocal cuts “Foot Steps” and “Hold On” to the floating finale of “Safe Passage.” 

Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are distinguished guests like Carol C (of Si*Sé), who lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single “De La,” veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local Clifton “Spug” Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia “Spug Life.” 

Safe Passage will be released by Wonderwheel on September 18th, 2020 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally.
