A few minutes before dawn, Hekske (the little witch) slowly opened her eyes after a blissful and very deep sleep, high up in the majestic Kemang tree at the foot of the Merapi volcano. She looked around and smiled tenderly when she saw that her friend Falke (the 10 year-old witch apprentice) was still fast asleep. She felt so deeply connected with this tree and even sensed its very slow but strong heartbeat. Hekske stayed in this state of perfect bliss for a long time, before trying to stretch her body. Then she realized she couldn’t move as her arms and legs had fused with the giant tree. Yet she didn’t worry … she felt perfectly safe and secure. During the next few minutes, the tree slowly loosened its grip on the young witch, while also Falke slowly started to open her eyes, just in time to witness a glorious sunrise on the slopes of Mount Merapi. After that, the girls descended to the foot of the tree, where they got a warm (and incredibly soft) morning hug from a family of friendly leopards. 
Then they felt the first raindrops. They hadn’t noticed that the beautiful sunrise had been chased away by dark clouds. The leopards scrambled for cover in the thickets, but the girls decided to enjoy the rain. It was the very first time they felt a warm tropical rain shower, which is much more pleasant than the cold raindrops they are used to in their home forest in Flanders. Hekske and Falke even started to dance through the rain, until they reached the bank of a river. They threw away their soaking wet dresses and waded into the water. Meanwhile the rain had turned into a real torrential downpour and the river started to swell rapidly. Then the witches let loose and flowed downstream with the water through the rainforest, barely noticing that the mighty river had flooded both banks. Finally they reached the lowlands and the river got over a mile wide. Finally the girls started to feel waves. They had reached the ocean. The muddy brown river water made place for clear aquamarine seawater, and the witches were soon surrounded by colorful little fish, and they even encountered a couple of curious bottlenose dolphins. The witches were in no hurry and swam all day long in the deep blue ocean until they saw a beautiful green island in the distance …
