Recorded in 2017. The set was recorded on a weekend at The Artist Brewery Lofts. Located in Lincolin Heights East Los Angeles we set up the decks outside my loft on the patio and in the sunshine. Jonny Maven starts off and at 32:09 I start mixing in. We go back to back for a few songs playing around and then at 45:34 I mix in and play for the rest of the set. For me I was experimenting playing music I enjoy and practicing on my technique which includes sudden cuts, beat matching, fx and mixing. Mixed on a Pioneer DJM-900NXS and XDJ 1000 Mk2's. Recorded directly onto Ableton Live DAW. Enjoy!

This nightclub called Asylum Afterhours in Honolulu, Hawaii was where I began my journey into the underground DJing. Asylum was where I cultivated my love for underground music and the dance community. I was fortunate to have been able to play at this intimate space before they closed during covid after existing for over 7 years. I'm grateful that they allowed me to express and create myself as an artist. This set was a combination of different techniques I haven't perfected yet but hopefully with some refinement I can make something really special. The setting wasn't packed but filled with the hardcore residents and DJ's, maybe only 20 people in the beginning of my set. This set is my favorite because it was the first set where I played music with a message. I opened with Brother IZ’s song: Hawai’i ‘78 “Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i” which has a deeply meaningful message that says "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness." I am Hawaiian so it felt necessary to play it. This wasn't a perfect set and there was a lesson learned moment.  I learned not to give lesson tutorials to people while I'm DJing and also to never let them touch the decks while I'm playing unless its an upcoming DJ and he knows what he's doing. The story is I was teaching a guy named John about loops and let him touch the decks. The improper loop actually sent the track  back to a cue point towards the beginning disrupting the flow I was in. Also I learned through my experience to never let the chicks that hang out in the DJ booth touch the decks when i'm playing…ever… but that was a lesson learned from a different DJ set. My music selection was for the most part on the fly. I didn't plan certain songs to be played one after the other like some sets. That's why I liked this set so much because in other sets i had planned a set list whereas in this I DJed this and was sampling parts of songs to layer over. Other than planning the opening song everything was on the fly. I listened to this set and I can honestly say I was feeling and enjoying the track selection and still do. I used a lot of fx to create rhythm's and to experiment with looping long sections of songs for an extended periods of time and even short 1 bar loops. Toward the end it gets kind of trippy. I really tried to push the boundaries of the intelligent 4 on the floor bringing in different rhythms. In the backroom at Asylum the sound system is located in the back of the room facing the artist and the dancers backs so it was pretty special listening to the set as opposed to through the booth monitor and speakers facing away. It really makes the room come alive with sound.  The production of the songs on the sound system and subs was something really special and brought out nuances you normally wouldn't feel at home on earbuds. The DJ set was done sober. Notes about the recording.

My name is Andrew J. Judge and im an artist with a background of music production and I am attending college to study sound in spaces so I can utilize that wisdom in producing. This is a DJing mix on a Pioneer DJM900NXS mixer and 2 x XDJ1000's and its a bunch of artists I like. 
So I slept in a nook in Terminal 1 at LAX Airport by the checkin on the 2nd deck. 3 days went by as I worked on finding a place to live. I was prepared to stay at the airport until my start date of college if need be. That wasn’t my personal plan but it was an option. On the early morning hours of the 4th day I was woken up by the police and was told I couldn’t sleep in the terminal. I knew that was my last night. Fortunately I was able to keep my Turntables, Mixer and Speaker at the Bob Hope USO at night when they locked it up. I had expressed to my mother my dilemma and she decided to pawn my fathers wedding ring. That wedding ring was actually given to me from my father but I decided to give it back to my mother because of sentimental reasons and the memories that ring held. When I heard my mother pawned the ring I was immediately upset. That ring was worth way more than $535.00 but it helped me stay at the Marriott airport hotel for 4 days. I was so upset about how much she got for the ring and but then I later thought. I am my fathers son. I was struggling and with that money he provided me with shelter until I could move into a place. That first night I went to sleep in a king size bed and I had dreamt of my father. So vivid was my father. A little bit younger version of himself before he passed at 83. It appeared he was about early 70’s. The thing about it was he wasn’t mad but he was laughing. Not at my situation but almost as if he was laughing at somebody who had been tormenting me. I took it as a sign and was grateful. Those 4 days I recovered as best as I could and rediscovered what it was like to swim in a swimming pool. Reviving as if it was like reconnecting with a long lost friend from my childhood. I also set up my turntables and recorded my first mix in LA in the hotel room. This collection of music Ive been digging looking back into the past trying to find songs that the legends grew up listening to. Some songs ive played in the past but with different layers of samples from other artists. What music would spark fond memories of somebody like John Digweed and Jimpster? A friend Lee Anderson had mentioned my set was progressive at a show I opened up for Taiki Nulight on August 15 2025. What I like is music with different rhythm patterns but still danceable. Groovy rhythms. I do think a lot about when I DJed at Asylum Afterhours and although the people some have moved on I still believe I was taught the right way. When it was about the music and dancing… and well lets be honest the occasional drug taking. But it was about the community and the quality of sound. My DJ set was heavy on FX as ive been practicing on unconventional methods to make it sound trippy. Like if you were high on acid or mushrooms what would that sound scape sound like. Also I discovered another artist… definitely my new favorite. He goes by Freaky Chakra and he’s from SF and was part of a psychedelic dance project. Please enjoy.

Yesterday I had woken up with a song in my head. Its from Dele Sosimi Afro Beat Orchestra called To Much Information. The date 12SEP2025. I got up and shuffled to the coffee pot still half asleep. Right next to my mattress on the floor is my DJ set up. I made my bed then sat down. I went through some music I haven’t heard in a while. This is what came out.
