Meet JODA: a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. 

Jono Grant and Darren Tate have history. Both together and apart, they have been there, done that and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score and nearing 100 singles speak to an output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalogue.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early Noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total) and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off round the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy.

Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?” 

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all round ­– not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

It was as if this pair of young-minded veterans were finding themselves all over again. Aptly enough, that fed into 'We Find Ourselves', featuring Grant's own vocals.

“Darren had the idea of using the ARP Odyssey for the bass sound,” explains Grant, “and it sounds very retro. We were listening to stuff like the Drive soundtrack by Kavinsky. So the tempo of the track actually comes from that style of music. We wouldn't have ended up at 110 BPM if it wasn't for listening to that kind of music."

DUALITY: An album in two parts.

Since day one, I have always struggled with how to present myself. Am I a dance music producer who does downtempo / experimental albums? Or is it the other way around? My first album had a bit of both, which is why I have referred to ‘Duality’ as the true followup to ‘It’s Artificial’. Part One focuses on the downtempo side of things with hints of indie-pop, while Part Two explores my progressive and trance roots. This is by far my most raw and honest work. On June 1, we released two songs from each part: “Equal” with Asbjørn (Official), and “Midnight” with Alison May.

I did not do this album alone. These are more than just “features,” these are collaborations. Together, we have woven a massive journey that is deeply personal, and showcases our most vulnerable selves. Many of these fabulous collaborators are also LGBT+, and I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful musical family.

Elevven release their first original Anjunabeats single, ‘The Distance’. 

Shahin Kanafchian and Swapneel Ukhalkar, aka Elevven, made their Anjunabeats debut with a remix of Gabriel & Dresden's 'You', recorded in collaboration with Myon, which went on to become one of Above & Beyond's top tracks of 2018.

The pair kicked off last year with a remix of 7 Skies’ ‘Sushi’, which climbed to #2 on the Beatport Trance Chart and was debuted by Above & Beyond in their ABGT450 set at The Drumsheds in London. They followed that up with a remix of Above & Beyond’s ‘Can’t Sleep’ with Ruben de Ronde, featured on Fatum's Anjunabeats Worldwide 10.

Debuted by Andrew to 20,000 fans at Above & Beyond’s sold-out Group Therapy 500 celebrations in Los Angeles last October, it’s the first remix to be revealed from Andrew’s fourth studio album 'Duality'. Met with acclaim from fans and supported by Sirius XM's Diplo and Liquid Todd, BBC Radio 1's Annie Nightingale and KCRW's Jason Bentley, the two-part album project was released via Anjunabeats in August and October 2022.

The string-laden closer to 'Duality pt. 1', 'Equal' saw Andrew collaborate with Danish singer-songwriter Asbjørn, previously heard as the voice of his 2015 trance smash, 'Super Human'. One of two collaborations between the pair across 'Duality pt. 1', Andrew and Asbjørn performed 'Equal' together on the main stage of Group Therapy Weekender London in September 2022.

Hailing from Scotland and Italy, production duo Alex Sonata & TheRio have rapidly ascended in the global trance scene. The pair first teamed up in 2018; after several collaborations, they made it official in 2020, and Alex Sonata & TheRio was born. They've released a string of explosive club tracks on Anjunabeats including 'Breath Of The Wild', 'Cala Luna', 'Time' and 'Are We Dreaming', and performed at Creamfields and Group Therapy Weekender London last year.
