Our obsession with the machine lies at the heart of all electronic music. But what sets the best electronic producers apart is their ability to harness technology to create sounds that are as emotional as they are innovative – something that shines through Andrew Bayer’s debut LP ‘It’s Artificial’.

Touching on everything from Flying Lotus-esque glitch-hop and leftfield electronica to swirling melodic techno and warped electro, ‘It’s Artificial’ is the sound of a maverick musician using his machines to their fullest.  

Having previously collaborated with BT, Norwegian producer Boom Jinx and Above & Beyond on their second artist album ‘Group Therapy’, Andrew Bayer’s recent solo productions have marked him out as a unique talent on the Anjunabeats label. The diverse sound of his ‘Distractions’ EP hit top spot in the Beatport electronica chart, received high praise from DJ Magazine and gained DJ support from Henry Saiz, Hernan Cattaneo and Dave Seaman.

Classically trained, the US producer first came to the fore as part of transatlantic trance duo Signalrunners – responsible for classic Anjunabeats releases like ‘Aria Epica’ and ‘These Shoulders’.  

Always leaning towards the more experimental areas of sound, his obsession with composition was refracted through a different lens when he studied at the famed Berklee College Of Music. Absorbing a range of avant-garde theory and advanced sound composition techniques, his writing style began to take a new, complex and deeply technical form – without losing sight of his core musical values 

This union of obsessively detailed sound design and classic music composition can be heard across ‘It’s Artificial’s eight tracks. Opening with the glitchy funk of ‘Nexus 6’ and the oddball orchestral ode ‘Dedicated To Boston’s Waste Management System’, it segues into the 4/4 groove with ‘Counting The Points’ – a beautifully schizophrenic epic that sounds like what would happen if Boards Of Canada and Deadmau5 ever collaborated. 

From the epic tech beast of ‘Monolith’ through the bouncy Balearic techno of ’Paper Cranes’ to the heavenly breakbeat of ‘From The Earth’, each subsequent track is as unique as the one before – often morphing from one into the other effortlessly. 

A compelling debut, ‘It’s Artificial’ signals the arrival of one of electronic music’s next great talents.

The 'Distractions EP' is my first concept work: a piece of music divided into four movements intended to be listened to continuously, clocking in at a half an hour worth of music. The EP is an introduction to a different side of my writing style, giving the listener an insight to my interest in long-form composition. My influences on this piece range from IDM to film music, which give me a wide pallet of sounds and moods to chose from. While the tempo of the piece is 126 BPM, it has the feel of a melodic techno record with the soul of a late 90's progressive trance track. The mood of the piece ranges from the foreboding and anticipating first movement, to the glitch-ridden, hopeful-sounding fourth movement. I used a fair amount of alternative digital signal processing and synthesis techniques, including C Sound and granular synthesis to give the piece's sound design a unique character and timbre. Henry Saiz emerges with the first works from long awaited and soon-to-be-heard debut LP, Reality Is For Those Who Are Not Strong Enough To Confront Their Dreams. The single, 'All The Evil Of This World', provides the perfect balance of both dark and light a combination that is so prominent across the forthcoming album. As part of a 2-year album production process, 'All The Evil Of This World' is not only a stand-out single from the LP, but it also provides the bridge into a new direction for Henry Saiz, as he gets set to embark into new territory as a musician. As a Madrid-native, Saiz is part of an exciting electronic generation in Spain, where alongside talented peers such as John Talabot and Pional, a new breed of artist is rising to the top. Having already carved out a successful career as a touring DJ/producer for some of the biggest electronic labels in the world, this new project is being self-released and is very much an exploration in sound and the format in which an electronic album can be presented. Specialising in analogue-driven, pulsing house-meets-futuristic-pop combined with field recordings, deep atmospherics and a tempo that focuses just as much on a listening experience as it does a dancefloor, as Henry puts it himself, 'I believe that electronic music can, and should, have a message. The infinite palate of sounds and textures give the power to evoke much more complex feelings and mindscapes than the traditional pop-rock instruments the fact that you can dance to it in a club doesnt mean it cant transmit a message (and a thrill) to the listener on many levels'. Featuring six different versions, from remixers including Chaim, ViLLAGE, Denis Kayron and Henrys own Hal Incandenza alter-ego, get prepared for the first of many new listening experiences to come from Henry Saiz in the coming months.
