I was born during the 80s, and grew up during a time when guys like Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen were always on the radio. You’d see them on MTV, looking like superheroes. I remember rock & roll sounding really big back then, and I’ve always found myself drawn to music of that size. It's what feels normal to me. It’s the bedrock. 

After releasing 2016's 'Skyline in Central Time,' I wanted to make something bigger. I’d been through a health scare -- a brain tumor nearly wiped out my hearing a few years earlier, requiring brain surgery and a very long recovery period -- and the whole process redefined how much music meant to me. I nearly lost my ability to make it, to hear it, to appreciate it... so as I got healthier, I became drawn to writing songs that sounded as huge and immediate as those songs I heard on the radio as a really young boy in 1989. That's why we called it 'Airwaves.' 

This a rock & roll record --  the sound of guitars, uplift, and huge hooks.
