THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE is a new straight-ahead setting of the great jazz standard by Marty Symes and Isham Jones and is newly published by Alfred/Belwin Jazz Publications in their Premier Jazz series. This arrangement pays tribute to the influence of master arrangers Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, and John Clayton. 

This chart opens with one chorus of contrafact (a newly composed melody over an existing set of chord changes). I wanted to give the rhythm section players the opportunity to work on phrasing a melodic line together, so the actual opening melody of the tune is set in Guitar, Piano, and Acoustic Bass.

Here’s a live concert mix from the Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra’s Fall 2019 concert of my composition ONWARD & UPWARD! This take features great solos by Craig Hall, Scott Turpen, and Zach Paris. ONWARD… was commissioned by the Long Beach Polytechnic High School Jazz Band in Long Beach, California directed by Chris Stevens for their Spring 2019 festival and concert season.  The piece was written in an attempt to bring some positive energy and groove to a world in tumult. The title is based on one of my standard responses to family and colleagues in challenging situations. ;)

ONWARD & UPWARD! is the title selection of the Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra’s first recording released in Spring 2020. The chart is available from Eric Richards Music Services online store here:
