Graeme Park & Mike Pickering @ The Hacienda, Manchester, U.K.  26.02.1989

After the feedback on my lockdown streams had been so joyous, particularly from the Hacienda fan contingent, I wanted to share the side of my record collection that had brought that joy during the streams in a live club environment.
The Hacienda was not only a huge part of UK club culture, but equally inspirational for many of us Stokie’s who were travelling up the M6 to experience some of these legendary nights.
Manchester was a real melting pot during this time. It wasn’t just the Hac of course, but other clubs such as Konspiracy & Most Excellent, just to name 2 that were having a big impact on all that were attending the events in Manchester during this time.
Then there were the record shops…
I would make my pilgrimage to Manchester most weekends, like most aspiring DJ’s would. The record buying mecca at the time was Eastern Bloc. There were of course iconic shops that pre-date this such as the legendary Spin Inn and then had other great shops such as MCR Underground which was an Iconic shop for many that sadly was forced to close after the tragic bombing in the mid 90s. Not forgetting the mighty Vinyl Exchange where I spent many happy hours.
Afflecks Palace for many was a haven of culture. Clothes, records, posters, all kinds of paraphernalia and a place where people would meet up to hang out. Most definitely one of Manchesters most iconic spots which also had an impact on me.

On Bank Holiday 2/5/04 I played my very first retro house event for Reckless @ Satchmos, Stoke-On-Trent. This was the first time I had properly looked back to the amazing tracks that shaped my club DJ career at Shelleys,Introspective, Freetown & early Golden days. A two hour set was recorded live on vinyl on 3 decks and 100 CD packs were sold after the event. This is the first time it was been available as a digital file.

A tribute to the Haçienda 

Here's a selection of tunes taking us back to the Haçienda in 1989. I remember dancing on the stage all night with my hands in the air, praising Mr Park and Mr Pickering for their work behind those decks. This mix is just a snippet of tunes played back then but I hope I managed to jog your memory and capture some of the emotion.

Finishing my trilogy of nostalgic nights at the grand daddy of all Manchester night clubs, the legendary 'Hacienda'.
 
I never got to DJ at the Hacienda (well once at a private function downstairs in the 'Gay Traitor' does that count?) But let's face it when you have Russ Marland & Mike Pickering on a Friday and the legendary partnership of Tom Wainwright & Graeme Park on a Saturday the only place you ever wanted to be in the Hacienda was on the dancefloor! I missed the early years as I was only a puppy in short trousers when it opened so I started going in 1992, but for me it was 1993-1995 that really stood out as the ultimate Hacienda years. The music, the atmosphere, Tom & Graeme working the night, it was just magical. I remember one night being stood outside were those huge fire doors and you could hear those David Morales 'Def Mix' deep basslines coming from inside, it was like a cathedral of sound... There will never be another like it.
 
This mix features the sounds and tracks that I loved and were played there in 1993. It's not necessarily the big anthems but for me personally every record just encapsulates the sound that was 'The Hacienda'. Hopefully it will transport you back to an imaginary 1993 night at the corner of 'Whitworth Street, Manchester'.

I started DJing in 1991 going on to have residencies for Up Yer Ronson in Leeds, Pacha @ The End and Heaven in London.  

I played with the likes of Sasha, John Digweed, BT, David Morales, Paul Oakenfold, Fathers Of Sound, Jeremy Healy, Alister Whitehead, Danny Tenaglia and many others.

Other clubs I played at include Amnesia in Ibiza, Sugar Shack at the Empire, Renaissance at The Cross, Club UK, Ripe and the Hacienda.
