In the world of 70s soul and funk there were few to match the talents of Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) A fine singer, song-writer, guitarist and producer he became one of the most important voices of African-American music with a string of hits and albums as a solo artist and member of The Impressions.

Never one to shy away from addressing the social-political problems of the time, his songs tackled drug abuse, crime, poverty and racism, winning him countless awards and honours. He also knew a talent when he saw it and in the early Seventies he wrote a song for an unknown soul singer called Patti Jo to record.

‘Make Me Believe in You’ was released in 1973 before being given a classic disco remix in 1975 when it became an overnight club classic. The lyrics are instantly attributable to Mayfield’s style;

“Keepin’ filled with all your temptation. You know it leaves me with no inspiration. Another chart playin’ on me. May have a hard time succeedin’, you see. You don’t seem quite like the others. Respectin’ me and your sisters and brothers. It would be awful, awful sad. To give love and you treat me so bad”

But for the lyrics to have any impact they need to be sung with soul and to hear Patti Jo’s rendition is akin to being right there, in New York, ’73 at the height of summer. A woman telling her man how it’s going to be. Patti Jo’s vocal is the perfect voice for Mayfield’s writing. It is the voice of a woman who has lived, loved and endured in a way only the great soul singers can truly portray. It’s an empowering kind of vocal, a woman standing up and protecting herself in that most sexist of times and environments. But what makes it truly remarkable is Patti Jo. She was sixteen years old when she recorded it.

"An American Prayer" is a tribute record made in 1978 by the Doors to their late hero & leader Jim Morrison. 
Rather overlooked, this album is nevertheless full of great cuts. Ray Manzarek was once again at his best, designing great keyboards grooves perfectly matching some obscure (but fascinating)Jim Morrison's spoken words & poems.
I have been working on various edits or remixes from this LP these last few weeks. Here is a housy take revisiting the short latin-spiced jam "Latino Chrome".

Named a ‘stellar edits provider’ by Mixmag and the ‘nu-disco don’ by Juno, Andy Buchan has become one of the leading names in the disco and edit scene. His music and edits have been played by BBC 6 Music, Greg Wilson, Optimo, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, Horse Meat Disco and Craig Charles, while Andy holds down residencies across Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Southport alongside regular club and festival bookings.

With over 200 releases across chart-topping releases on dozens of disco-fried labels, including Peppermint Jam, Hot Digits, Midnight Riot and Paper Disco, Andy launched his Hot Gorilla Records imprint in 2020 along with Conan The Selector. The label hit the ground running, with several Juno Download No.1s, multiple Traxsource Top 10s and four tracks in the Best of 2021 Beatport chart. That led to the Hot Gorilla funky monkeys becoming DJ support for The Brand New Heavies' sell-out UK tour. 

Andy’s own music has been picked up for reviews in DJ Mag and Mixmag, plus radio support from 6Music and Rinse FM and club and festival plays from big-name DJs, including Bicep, Claptone, Horse Meat Disco, Greg Wilson, Peggy Gou, Justin Robertson, Electric Chair and more. That support took an interesting turn when the British National Library Sound Archive asked him to enter his back catalogue into their music collection! 

His previous residences include Chow Down and Flight Club in Leeds, Inventery and Grosvenor in Manchester alongside regular guest slots at legendary Edinburgh club The Street and the Southport Disco Festival. Alongside that, Andy has played across the UK in recent years, warming up for Huey 6 Music, Craig Charles, Dr Packer, Groove Armada, Psychemagik, Hot Chip and headlining at gigs in Manchester, Birmingham, York, Dubai and Todmorden’s legendary Golden Lion pub. 

This is just the latest chapter in Andy’s career. After freelancing for Mixmag and training as a journalist, he moved to Dubai in 2004, working for Time Out Dubai before launching DJ Mag Middle East. He was a regular on the club and festival scene, first with his own long-running, award-winning nights and with long-term residencies at Pacha and Trilogy, alongside back-to-back bookings for Creamfields UAE. It was in Dubai that he cemented his open-genre, curveball DJ style by playing alongside a wide variety of DJs like Fatboy Slim, Mark Ronson, Basement Jaxx, Todd Terje, Norman Jay, Liam Gallagher, Feel My Bicep, Graeme Park and more.

Now back in the UK, he’s become a mainstay of the disco scene while his label Hot Gorilla Records continues to grow into one of the most exciting labels in the scene, including festival slots at Beatherder and Standon Calling.
