This was the initial "Vultures II" track I put out that has shitty sound production.  I want to bury it in hell, but I kept it up for comparison purposes.  Old headphones and an errant filter on the master FX board are to blame... Vultures (The Original Version That Sucks)

I think I'm learning how to not waste so much headroom on sub-bass, while still having a bottom heavy feel.  

The main sample is a Shoshone indian (public domain recording) played in reverse and doubled - one pitchshifted hi, the other low, so they're an octave apart, combined in a vocoder panned dead center and only slightly audible and also sent to the machine input of two modular synthesizers with LFOs to control the panning and crossover modules in each so that when one is hi, the other is lo; when one is panned right, the other is left.  That's what gives it the warbly unstable feeling.

The sub-bass thump is of my own design in Caustic - I shot a sine wave down through the resonant point of a high pass filter set to the lowest frequency caustic allows (followed by a limiter of course) to get something similar to an 808 kick, then resampled it even lower ( around 36 hz ), bandpass filtered it out, but added some mild saturation on the parallel compression bus because otherwise it's too low to identify as a note.

The problem with the previous incarnations was that I, uh...didn't know how to do that.  Sub-bass is tricky, since it is by definition almost inaudible as a tone (felt more than heard), one's instinct is to turn it up louder, which is invariably incorrect - it is already the loudest thing on the track, and quickly ends up costing you more headroom than all your other tracks combined...blah, blah blah.

Anyway, I think I'm getting better at that.

This is simply a much better re-master of Vultures. The previous version, BlackGlass, had some severe flaws that somehow made it past "quarantine" in my post-production work.  I'd been using some old cheap cans that were all-midrange & pitiful high- and low-frequency response sooo... there was an accidental filter applied to the master FX section that was essentially cutting out the midrange frequencies and making it sound tinny and hi-freq overdriven as fuck. So hopefully I can save some face with this much refined & de-flawed "Master Beta" edition reconstructed with my newer pair of top Sennheiser cans & in-line amp. BTW- If you ever pictured me buying, using or wearing "Beats By Dre" gear...

"The History"- This no Cinderella story, I wouldn't keep reading if I were you.. It was a happy accident, a natural collision between science & recklessness.
