DVS1, aka Minneapolis-raised Zak Khutoretsky, will release a new Klockworks record on the 16th of July 2014. It will be his third outing on Ben Klock's label, following acclaimed records in both 2009 and 2011.

DVS1 is not just a techno DJ or producer, when the time is right his sets will gladly diverge into other styles to take the dancefloor where he sees fit, and his studio work too. 'Black Russian' sounds DVS1 like in house mode, as dub techno-inspired piano chords repeat to infinity, floating above padded kicks and moving hi-hats. This is one of the lightest tracks released under the DVS1 alias, but it's still equipped to create blissful ecstasy when played - a favourite closing track for both DVS1 and Ben Klock.

Flip over to the B-side and it's back to Zak's usual tone of dark techno, the style exhibited on his previous two Klockworks 12"s. The eerie bleeps and haunting atmospheres of 'Creeping' evolve for seven minutes, driven along by shuffling high-end percussion. It is understated and subtly arranged as a tool, the kind of track DJs rely on to keep momentum building with energy and elegance.

'Spying' is another prime example of DVS1's take on minimalism, it is stripped-down and makes the most of the fewest possible elements. 'Spying' cropped up in Ben Klock's Fabric mix last year, and has been been a staple in his DJ sets; for good reason, it embodies the deep pulse and light/dark contrast of all Klockworks output.

2014 has already provided three stellar DVS1 releases, two on his own label Hush and this. It's all evidence that this producer's work in the studio is now on par with his exceptional talent behind the decks, quite a prospect for fans new and old.

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014. 

Alan Fitzpatrick - For An Endless Night (Jel Ford Remix) - Drumcode - DC140

Taking the helm this time around, we welcome Eelke Kleijn, Prok & Fitch, and Boris to the Toolroom Live squad. Pioneers and legends in their own rights, each artist brings their unique signature sound to the mix, creating a perfect balance of depth, enchanting moments, and straight up dance floor burners.

Dutch master of melody Eelke Kleijn was tasked with showcasing the deeper side of Toolroom, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking. It's obvious to see why Eelke is often referred to as a modern day composer. His two exclusive tracks 'The Voices' and 'Oranje Liefde' fit like bespoke gloves in the musical odyssey of his mix. Eelke's carefully crafted approach to composition and production really put him in a league of his own. Including 7 of his own productions seamlessly blended with hand selected creations from luminaries like Fritz Kalkbrenner, Gabriel Ananda, and Gregor Tresher, this mix will take you on an emotional journey of sound.

Drumcode live this week is an hour from Adam Beyer’s set at Fuse, Brussels. Expect to hear tracks from Mark Reeve, Dario Zenker and an edit from Adam Beyer himself.
