Few producers understand the dark art of drum & bass as intimately or knowledgably as Basher. A consummate contributor to the RAM legacy for over seven years, he’s executed countless precision appearances across the label’s extended network. And right now he’s about to make his debut on the ever-consistent, next-level focussed Program imprint.

‘Trojan’ says it all. Even the title comes with heavyweight, dangerous connotations. Igniting with icy charm, Basher hurls us headfirst into an ocean of guttural bass and rolling concrete beats. Two low-end leads tightly twist and weave to create an enveloping sense of drama; savage distorted notes hammer his menacing message home while a creamy sub slopes and slithers beneath, tying up the elements to create the ultimate impact. Like the virus, ‘Trojan’ is instantly infectious; reprogramming your very understanding of groove mechanics.

Next up, ‘Weep’. Collaborating with Frankee, ‘Weep’ is a soundclash of significant proportions. Long-term friends, Basher played a hugely influential role in Frankee’s career, inspiring him to explore the studio in the first place. From the second you press play it’s clear the two complement each other perfectly; measured, moody and mesmerising, ‘Weep’ creatively uses tightly clipped vocal shots as percussive and melodic devices that build dynamically before the waves of bass and pneumatic beats sweep you off your feet. Brutal yet bouncy, furious yet funky, ‘Weep’ is a matchless example of contemporary D&B production.

Following a string of successful label releases in a short period of time, DLR is ready to unleash his debut solo album on Dispatch Recordings, entitled ‘Seeing Sounds’.

Having previously collaborated with Octane on the ‘Method In The Madness’ album, DLR has quickly established his own signature sound; an instantly recognizable groove mischievously poking through the mix, terrorizing dancefloors in a truly unique way.

As an album concept, ‘Seeing Sounds’ is DLR’s exploration into sound design and how the manipulation of organic elements and subtle soundscapes can create imagery within the music; to set the scene and immerse the listener up to a cinematic level.

Commencing this quest from abstract beginnings, DLR investigates over a selection of different formats and styles, ranging from the tantalizing neck snapper “Charlie Brown” to the sinister breakbeat nonchalance of “I Found Out”.

Inviting external influences to the fold; specially selected guests join the project to explore further, including Total Science, creating the cataclysmic “Control The Sound”, Hydro, the ambient chords and emotive vocal sample in ‘Empyreal” and partner in crime Break, resulting in the mighty, yet constrained “Human Error”.

Since Resident Advisor’s initial announcement, the album has garnered support from all corners, including Noisia, Friction (numerous Radio 1 plays), Goldie, Calyx & Teebee and The Upbeats, with Mixmag selecting it as their February ‘Album of the Month’. The early support from Friction on his BBC Radio 1 show also led to a special invite where DLR dropped an album mix in for live broadcast on the 13th of January.

With an innate understanding of the technology available and a shrewd willingness to exploit it, ‘Seeing Sounds’ is the culmination of DLR’s very best work to date.

Tough Linen [Bassrush Premiere]

Dispatch Dubplate returns in October, with two of the most infamous unreleased dubs of the past decade; the Alix Perez & Zero T collaborations ‘The Ladders’ & ‘Enemy Of Reason’ will finally be made available digitally and on a limited vinyl press. 

A ‘dubplate’ in its purest form, becoming something of an urban legend in DnB, the tracks were kept ultra-exclusive for years; sent only to a select few DJs, only accessible to those attending the clubs, fueling the excitement that made up the dubplate culture we celebrate within this series.

Truly defying the test of time, we present two tracks that still provoke just as strong a reaction on the dancefloor almost a decade on, and for some, spurs nostalgic memories of ‘The End’ in London. 

With 400 hand stamped, signed and numbered heavyweight vinyl copies available, there is a very limited press and much like previous Dispatch Dubplates, this will never be re-pressed.

The first release from DLR's new label from Bristol, 'Sofa Sound'.

DLR needs little introduction; his name has become synonymous with underground drum & bass and from the beginning he’s stayed true to his roots – he’s never watered down his sound for a more commercial appeal. This stance has seen DLR rise to notoriety, even after his very first output. And following his releases on Metalheadz, Dispatch, Trendkill Records, Shogun Audio and Break’s prolific Symmetry imprint, he’s embarked on a journey which will now see him set up his own imprint Sofa Sound, continuing the ethos which has made him so revered. 
Sofa Sound was inspired by the creative arts community which flourishes throughout Bristol. It embodies the DIY spirit which has sprung up across its many art spaces, helping to nurture the drum & bass scene there which has continued to grow since it first came to the city’s venues. For their first release, they’ve brought together a three-track EP which gives a taster into what Sofa Sound has planned for the coming months. Featuring label head DLR, as well as collaborator Quadrant and even a free download, ‘Sofa Sound 001’ will stand as a monumental part of the imprint’s back catalogue. 
DLR and Quadrant’s ‘Ghostfish’ rolls out on a heavyweight bassline which quickly switches to subterranean levels, drawing you deeper with every pulsing sub. Its percussive elements cut through the mix, shaking the composition and giving an edge with every successive drum beat. ‘Ghostfish’ is heavyweight business... Neither DLR nor Quadrant pulls the breaks following each tide of sonic. 
Up next is DLR’s standalone offering ‘Don’t Make Sense’, a crushing, unforgiving roller with moody atmospherics and stabs of distortion. The track rattles amongst snipped up vocal samples and keyed note patterns, creating an unfamiliar soundscape for you to immerse your aural synapses. And finally, you’re introduced to free download ‘Throwback’, living up to its namesake with metallic kicks and snares which add to the track’s punch. DLR nods to his roots throughout ‘Throwback’, proving his longevity in the game. This history will be brought into the soul of Sofa Sound... A label which will become a staple within drum & basses discography.

Within the vast plain of a once feral land glistened a metropolis of undeniable beauty, a monument to those who had triumphed over what had lain in this place before. Brightly as it shone however, the shadows cast by its towering spires told a different story. The creation of such beauty had been an ugly thing indeed, and still within its darkest alleys there were those who remembered what had been and what they had suffered. In secret they met, practitioners of the old ways who stood determined to see the return of the land’s natural state. They had watched the land carefully, seeing what others did not within each passing day’s minute differences. Thus, when the day of their ascendancy at last arrived, their ritual had already begun.

Those living at the city’s outskirts reported it first, a low rumbling that began to shake the heirlooms from their shelves. Quickly this turbulence began to spread through the city, and by the time it had reached the center the metropolis’ reckoning had arrived. A great beast had begun to smash its way through the city’s outlying areas, trampling all in its path with the unrestrained fury of the wilds. With singular intent in charged headlong towards the city’s center, reducing shops and homes to rubble without caution or care. Wrought from the flesh of one of the plain's native creatures, the great beast had been brought forth by the practitioners of the old ways to carry out their righteous vengeance. Thus they cackled as the perpetrators of their subjugation feld beneath its thunderous hooves whilst screaming out a single monstrous name, HOGZILLA.

EATBRAIN veteran Mindscape returns to the label under the newly revised moniker MNDSCP, continuing in the work of his original alias under the novel title with his latest EP on the label. Following the release of his three part Reanimator LP on the label in 2018, MNDSCP now presents HOGZILLA as his latest body of work, setting the stage for future releases under his new alias with four tracks powered by his singularly tech focused sonics.
