Nunavut Pop Duo: Make Friends, Not Money

Iqaluit music producer Thor Simonsen has joined musical forces with Sanikiluaq's Kelly Fraser to compete in this year's CBC Searchlight music competition. 

Their new single "Friends Are Free" is a nostalgic celebration of great friendships in Nunavut, around Canada, and throughout the world. 

"The idea came to me in a dream" said Thor. "I woke up in Beijing central station without money, and without knowing anyone. I then realized that all humans are basically kind. If I could make new friends then I would be ok. We really don't need money to survive, just love."

When asked about the song's message, Kelly stated: "In this western world of consumerism and capitalism, there are things much more important than money. I think people forget that sometimes."

Thor and Kelly – who are also long-time friends in real life –  began recording the vocals in Iqaluit in February.

"I love working with [Thor]," said Kelly. "He is such a talented producer, and we have this amazing musical chemistry. Making the song and music video was a lot of work, but it always felt like fun!"

The duo hopes the song will make it to the final stages of the music competition – their dream is to perform "Friends Are Free" live on stage at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto. 

"We want to show people in the South who we are," said Thor. "We want to put Nunavut on the map and make friends with the rest of Canada."

The duo plans to give the song away for free download until International Friends Day, August 7.
