Majority cultural norms in the United States suppress our ability to truly feel our grief and each person’s experience with grief is as unique as the grief itself. Writer, somatic practitioner, and artist Camille Sapara Barton’s take on grief speaks directly to the ways that BIPOC and queer communities and individuals disproportionately experience unique constellations of loss. In their work, Camille honors every experience: The loss of displacement from homelands, severed lineages and ancestral ways of knowing. The grief of colonization and theft. The deep heaviness that burrows into our bodies when society tells us our bodies are wrong.

In this conversation with author, educator, activist, and intuitive healer Michelle Cassandra Johnson, Camille shares ways we can tend to our grief both alone and in community, drawing upon their new book Tending Grief, written specifically to center and hold the grief of BIPOC communities.

In this episode, guest host Aluki Kotierk speaks with Dr. Norma Dunning about her book "Kinauvit? What's Your Name? The Eskimo Disc System and a Daughter's Search for her Grandmother," which investigates the little-known system of issuing numbered identity tags to Inuit in Canada between 1941 and 1978. She situates the disc system withing the broader process of colonization, detailing the impacts of this dehumanizing system on the health and well-being of Inuit and highlighting how the disc system contributed to intergenerational impacts on herself, her children, and her relationship with her community.

Voices from the field 35 – Kinauvit? What's your name? The Eskimo disc system

In this episode, Grade 12 student - Dani Taylor explores the Songhai Empire and the impact of European Colonization on its downfall. The Songhai Empire, flourishing in the western Sahel from the 15th to 16th centuries, was one of the largest empires in African history, succeeding Mali as the dominant power. Its strategic location along trans-Saharan trade routes, controlling gold and salt, fueled its wealth and cultural centers like Timbuktu and Gao. However, the rise of European maritime trade along the Atlantic coast in the late 15th century gradually diminished the importance of these overland routes, weakening Songhai's economic base. This decline, coupled with internal strife, made the empire vulnerable to external forces. In 1591, the Moroccan invasion, equipped with firearms, decisively defeated the Songhai army, leading to the empire's collapse and fragmentation, marking a significant turning point as European influence began to reshape West Africa.

L'empire Songhaï, qui a prospéré dans le Sahel occidental du XVe au XVIe siècle, fut l'un des plus grands empires de l'histoire africaine, succédant au Mali comme puissance dominante. Topic and Guests: David Vine contextualizes and provides updates of the Mauritius-UK agreement made in October 2024 and what it means for Chagossians who were forcibly removed from their Indian Ocean homeland of Chagos Islands by the U.K. to clear the area for a U.S. military base on Diego Garcia Island.  In early October 2024, the UK announced that it had come to an agreement with Mauritius and that the UK would hand back Chagos Islands to Mauritius.  But under the agreement the UK maintains control of Diego Garcia.  Also, the agreement is subject to a treaty by the parties involved.  David Vine is a writer, and political anthropologist and former professor of anthropology at American University.  David Vine is the author of the book Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia.

Catherine Boland Erkkila is an architectural historian specializing in American cultural landscapes of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She previously worked as the managing editor of SAH Archipedia and taught at Rutgers University.

Sasha Davis, an activist and scholar of radical environmental advocacy, brings new hope for social justice movements by looking to progressive campaigns that have found success by unconventional means. Sasha Davis is an activist and professor in the Department of Environmental and Sustainability Studies at Keene State College in New Hampshire. He is author of Replace the State: How to Change the World When Elections and Protests Fail; Islands and Oceans: Reimagining Sovereignty and Social Change; and The Empires’ Edge: Militarization, Resistance, and Transcending Hegemony in the Pacific.

Laurel Mei-Singh is assistant professor of geography and Asian American studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Khury Petersen-Smith is the Michael Ratner Middle East Fellow and the Co-Director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies.
