Excited to present the next installation of our selector series, this time straight from Lima, Peru. "El Hit de la Medianoche" is a project that aims to recover the Peruvian musical legacy, collecting treasures across different regions in Peru since 2000, restoring records, digitalizing tracks and archiving hits, and doing pirate FM radio presentations. 

For this episode, the mystery mind behind "Hit de la Medianoche" made a deep dig into his collection and has dusted of a vinyl-only selection of danceable records, preparing a medley-style mix of previously unheard psych funk, soul, disco, and different styles and crossovers of latin music across different decades from Peru, called "El Paraíso del Boogie". El Yacuruna es un dios mitológico que vive en las profundidades de los ríos y los lagos de la amazonía cerca de Iquitos. Tiene el poder para convertirse en forma humano dando la apariencia de ser un hombre guapo. Usando poderes mágicos de seducción, a menudo engaña a las muchachas inocentes, haciéndolas enamorarse de él y seduciéndolos. Una vez que han caído a sus hechizos, él trae las chicas para su hogar en las profundidades del agua donde se convierten en los seres subacuáticos parecidos a la Yacuruna, para nunca más verse otra vez por el mundo exterior. Según esta leyenda de Iquitos, la Yacuruna es parecida al dios Poseidon de mitología griega. Sus sujetos naturales son los peces y los reptiles acuáticos. Se dicen que él viaja por los ríos y los lagos del la amazonía por la noche montando un enorme cocodrilo negro, adornado con una boa como un collar. Las personas locales de Iquitos dicen que durante el día, la Yacuruna duerme en las profundidades de las aguas, nunca cerrando un ojo.

Music continues to evolve and lions continue to roar!  Thus is the case with Michael The Lion and his first EP on Soul Clap Records. Great music often pays homage to its foundational past and Michael’s original music accomplishes this with his sample-based focus rooted in a disco-funk-soul core but with a keen sensibility for today’s dance floor. His incorporation of live vocals from Amy Douglas’ gutsy performance on the modern funk monster “Get It On” results in original songs vs. the “one hour bedroom tracks” that proliferate today. 

Bosq was put on remix duty for the EP, and here he describes his process - "I decided to approach this remix a little different and write an entirely new song under Amy's vocals. I took her (incredible) performance and just jammed along, I think I started with piano. It ended up being I think the most instruments I've ever played on a single track. From piano, Rhodes, percussion, drums, bass and once I mustered the courage for saxophone and trumpet too. It was a different approach to remixing for me. I treated it more like writing an original track than a remix. In my head this track lives on a dance floor somewhere like the loft in the early 70s, I hope it can take y'all there too!"
