A real pleasure to host one of my favourite djs in the Animix series, the ever-charming and immensely talented @playvlada, with her distinctly recognisable signature sound.

With a style deep, but somehow oozing with equal parts crunch and groove, Vlada is a master of blending her wide and eclectic old-school record collection into undulating journeys of bassy, hypnotic grooves, telling of her longstanding passion to the craft. 

The Russian born, but Berlin based mainstay balances touring with running mix series/party collective speLL in Berlin & beyond, with @vaahzer. One of my favourite parties in town :)

Playing one of the first sets & seeing the room, decor and the big bad subs of Room 2, years of fantastical lore and reality melded, I wanted to keep it sexy, wonky, trippy— imagining a psychic electric swamp and how one would levitate thru it... to the sky. No bpm trickery this time. Out to the heavenly bodies of the universe! ;)

The project began with a session at the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, where initial sonic experiments took shape. These were later developed into four interconnected movements—each crafted to feel both weightless and propulsive. The result is four high-speed, hypnotic dance pieces, best described as ‘feather-tech.

Welcoming the lovely Refuge Worldwide co-founder and dub-master @richard-akingbehin to the Animix series this week, with a beautiful journey of minimal house infused with his signature dub styles.

Clear in his DJ'ing, but also his work with @refugeworldwide, and his immaculately curated label, @kynant-records, Richard is an all-round classy selector, and a champion of community. Through his various outputs, his deep & considered knowledge and taste shines. 

Richard always impresses me with the diversity of moods he presents via his DJ'ing, hybrid collaborations with legend Tikiman, b2bs with other legends like livwutang, and his label - a diversity that's always strung together with his incredibly distinctive psychedelic, soothing dub formula.

Plug into into the euphonic world of Shoal with his debut EP for Animalia, Temporal Blend. The Utrecht based producer dives head first into the release with his mesmerisingly warm, rich & silky-smooth groove, all characteristics that define his unique take on techno.

Presenting the ever-lovely and ever-inspiring @mikemidnight for #175 in the series. The Boorloo/ Perth based artist initially garnered attention through his output of insanely dreamy trip-hop productions... the perfect combination of emotional & uplifting, and immaculately produced. Mike plays live as a solo artist and now makes up 1/3 of the exciting new band Trickpony, made up of Roza Terenzi, Emkay & Mike himself. 

Beyond his knack for weaving tear-jerkingly beautiful trip hop infused songs - Mike is also a great DJ. Here, with a more club-oriented mix, he showcases his taste & talent, a BTS look into the genres & moods that make up the mind of the talented artist.

Animix One Hundred & Seventy Five: Mike Midnight

For the newest instalment, i'm really happy to welcome the incredible Brussels-based AliA (@aliamusicc). The local mainstay is a regular on Kiosk radio and runs her own label - @artisjokrecords. Alyah, better known as AliA,  has an exciting & unique approach to dj'ing. She is known for her blend of contemporary club music with jazz, classical and experimental sounds. 

I find AliA's musical outputs incredibly refreshing - the kind of artist who reminds you what a really good DJ can do - they can present genres & sounds to you that you'd otherwise maybe not typically explore, in a new and exciting way. For her Animix, Alyah has gone for an intensely chill blend of ambient & immersive music, with minimal, glitchy, dub techno, jazz, classical sounds and more.

Animalia's natural evolution into new regions & sounds comes with the introduction of @sub-basics to the label. For the first iteration in a new series of releases by the London based artist, Sub Basics brings his signature blend of minimal UK bass, with prismatic percussion loops & spaced out, psychedelic grooves, meeting a tech-house adjacent score that underpins the release.

This week. welcoming a dear friend and one of my all-time favourite DJs & producers, Swiss wizard @agonis-amenthia - part of the mystical Basel crew - @amenthia-recordings.

A "techno" sound so unique, modern & boundary pushing, it makes you question the genre entirely. Agonis has become known for his bass, techno, dub, idm-everything.. infused releases, always meticulous and full of surprises. On top of a an extremely reliable and exciting back-catalogue of music and always on-point curation of Amenthia alongside his label co-head Garcon, he is also an incredible DJ. Here for Animalia a special mix inspired by many special shared moments on the dancefloor <3  pure euphoria!

For #180, and in conjunction with his brand new Animalia EP that is officially out today - here's Sub Basics, UK based producer, with a mix made up of 100% of his own productions.

Tom aka Sub Basics has been humbly putting music into the world via Temple of Sound , Modern Hypnosis and more, for the last few years.  Personally, when I first discovered his tunes a while back, it was a no brainer to work with him on an EP. His  music somehow sits at the perfect junction of so many different genres, moods and styles I enjoy. A versatile and prolific producer. Super happy to welcome him to the Animalia family.

This week's animix comes from the incredible duo, Atrice (@atricemiras) - a mystical pairing who are part of a pool of insanely talented artists in the small Central European state, Switzerland -  there is a seemingly bursting ratio of talent per capita in this country!.

Drawing inspiration from everyday encounters and digital overstimulation, Atrice's music is refreshing, unique and modern - idm, experimental & bass driven - it somehow also sits perfectly amongst the class & purity of old school & solidified genres like dub, bass, techno - which is seen in their releases on labels like Illian Tape. 

On top of their productions and live sets, Lino & Pablo extend their craft with their on theme DJ'ing - always presenting new & exciting.. and always making perfect sense. For their animix, a beautiful journey through dub and beyond.

An extremely underrated  Naarm based artist, WTP (@worktheperipherals) for number #182. Miles has been releasing music under his WTP alias for a few years now - with releases via Hannah D's @thespacebetweenus & Millu & Pjenne's @companionmelb & more. 

Locally adored & undeniably talented, Miles' releases are consistently luscious & groovy.- reminiscent of the pure bliss freedom of raves during late summer at home. Housey, progressive & full of rare-cuts - this mix is a perfect extension of MIles' style & a great fit for the series. Welcoming Spring in full bloom in Australia :)

Widely known by friends & scene-heads as an absolute sweetheart - Carl's warmth and creativity really shine through in his musical leanings. 

Carl H (@carl-haop) is a legend of the UK scene and someone I would consider at this point as prolific  - between running his own record label Animals On Psychedelics,  making regular headline DJ appearances at clubs.and festivals globally, and frequent b2bs with other legends like Jane Fitz - Carl really shows how it's done. I've always admired his humble nature and clear passion for music - the way I believe it should be :) 

So happy to host him finally on the series - thank you Carl for this mesmerisingly groovy mix, that really, for me, speaks to his signature sound!

Kenny is an incredibly talented artist - his crispy, driving & psychedelic productions, via an impress slew of vinyl releases in recent years, as well as spelllbinding live-sets. consisently leave me mesmerised. 

Shoal's music really embodies the Animalia vision - not genre bound , but an amalgamation of broad styles,  and influences from many different worlds.. . & most importantly, full of personality. 

Kenny has his own unique flavour and sound, and his passion & love for music can really be felt in his delicate attention to detail & sense for hypnotic groove.. not to mention flawless sound design.& ability to think outside the box. 

A no brainer for the Animix series really :)

One of Melbourne's most longstanding & prolific mainstays for this week's Animix -@pjenne. Host of Passing Notes, on beloved community radio station PBS;  incredibly talented DJ , & co-founder of @companionmelb alongside another favourite, @millu .
 
Penny is an authentic example of what Melbourne and it's community look like.  She's been actively involved in the scene from all corners for a long time now - whether it be headlining parties & major fesivals (locally and abroad),  solo or alongside her DJ sister Millu; or running her beautifully curated weekly radio show which often highlights the incredible plethora of talented local DJs we have here in Australia. Alongisde Millu she also co-runs the increidble local output @companionmelb - which has seen epic releases from local artists, including Acopia, Kita and more.  

When i was first learning to DJ, it was inspiring to see women in the scene like Penny - an intelligent and driven powerhouse with loads of talent & taste to back it up - & most importantly, unashamedly herself.  Penny has a very distinctive style and has been instrumental in paving the way to what is now seen in the current global electronic music community as the "Australian sound" - even more importantly, as an early leading female figure. A local gem!

@aedis-aedis, hailing from Barcelona and currently based in Amsterdam, presents his debut EP on Animalia. In his unique interpretation of the label, we find the artist diving deeper into a sound he's been shaping over time, refining its identity through subtle evolution and focus. The EP leans into an off-centre dance sound -- deep, dub-tinged, and anchored in groove and movement. It builds on techno's pulse and minimal structure, keeping the rhythm upfront while letting small shifts and textures do the talking.
