The talented Colombian/ Canadian artist is known for his solo productions, as well as @ambien-baby alongside @d-tiffany, and La Fe, a collaboration between him and Michael Red. He also runs his own label, Isla (@sonidoisla). Through any respective alias or project, Daniel has an amazing array of eclectic  sounds on offer.

This mix is yet another showcase of his diverse and exciting musical taste. I'm so happy to have him as part of the series.

Introduce yourself? Pronouns?  1 fun fact about yourself?

Hiii I’m Kia, (people often ask me what my real name is so I thought I’d specify that). Pronouns are she/her. 

Fun fact - my name is a car dealership (Kia Sydney), and people often think that’s a joke too. My Croatian grandfather changed his last name to Sydney when he moved there in the 50s as a means of getting a job in what was a very (and still for the most part is) racist society. 

Biggest musical influence from childhood?

Well when I was going up I played the piano, clarinet and percussion (played the glockenspiel in the school band lol) so that definitely led me to be musically minded from a young age. When I was 13/14 I remember getting into electronic music via big idm producers like aphex twin, four tet and aleksi perala. Because I was into really melodic stuff I think it was the first time I’d heard it done in an electronic way and I remember finding that really exciting. 

Favorite DJ mixing trick? 

Cobblestone jazz - India in me. It’s not particularly easy to mix per say, but it’s an insane 14 minute roller that completely shifts vibe in the middle, so I always play it if I feel like I need a breather or an energy shift in a set.

Early 2000s. So much good tech house. 

If you had to describe yourself as a flower, which one would it be and why?

Sunflower. I flourish in the summertime and I really really hate winter.

femme collective consisting of my friends Meg + nenagh, who book the best lineups. We also do a collab party animalia x vortex and the parties always have a really special energy. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

More community run clubs and more people who listen and participate in the scene understanding the importance of community in dance music generally.

With the release of their self-titled debut album, Berlin-based Australian duo a.s.o. – made up of DJ and producer Tornado Wallace (AKA Lewie Day) and singer-songwriter Alias Error (AKA Alia Seror-O’Neill) – fleshed out their nostalgic, dreamy and trip-hop-skewing sound across 11 emotive tracks described as “torch songs for club freaks”.

Across their Sunday Mix, the pair untangle their knot of influences for an hour-long mix that features a selection of music they’d choose to listen to while “trapped inside on a rainy Berlin Sunday”.

The producer best known as Huerco S. accompanies One Day, our record of the year, with two hours of minimal and dub introspections.

This summer, Kansas-raised DJ and producer Brian Leeds released One Day under his revived Loidis alias. Enamoured with the restrained, loopy sounds of early '00s dance music, the album’s eight tracks linger in the air, luxuriating in dubbed-out chords, swung beats and sub vibrations. It's our favourite record of 2024 for a reason. 

It's a sound he's coined, in his typically teasing fashion, "dub mnml emo tech." All winks aside, it’s no wonder One Day became the soothing balm we all needed. In a scene overwhelmed by hard and fast trends, the softer—and Leeds might argue, more sincere—stylings of minimal and dub techno enjoyed a welcome second wind. 

Not only was One Day one of our favourites of the year (more on that this week), but it also inspired us to break our usual no-repeats rule, inviting Leeds back to the RA Podcast under a different alias after his 2019 turn as Huerco S. 

"The prevailing trends in dance music are more and more maximalist," Leeds noted. "I missed restraint, subtlety, and sensuality." Clocking in at just under two hours, RA.965 embodies that ethos in spades.
