🟦 A) Descendants of the ancient Thracians
• This theory is primarily supported by Greek scholars.

• It is based on population continuity in the Rhodopes and certain genetic traits that point to a long period of isolation.

• It presents the Pomaks as the original inhabitants of Thrace who adopted Islam during the Ottoman era.

🟧 B) Descendants of Medieval Turkic Tribes
• Supported by Turkish historians.

• The Pomaks are believed to be descendants of the Pechenegs, Avars, and Cumans, Turkic tribes settled in the region before or during the Ottoman expansion.

🟩 C) Slavs Islamized during the Ottoman Era
• Common theory in Bulgaria.

• The Pomaks are believed to be Slavic Bulgarians who converted to Islam between the 15th and 17th centuries under Ottoman rule.

• Bulgaria officially recognizes them as “Bulgarian Muslims.”

🏺 Antiquity and Early Middle Ages
• The Rhodope region was inhabited by Thracian tribes, later Hellenized and Romanized.

• Between the 6th and 7th centuries, Slavic peoples arrived and mixed with the local population.

• In the 9th–13th centuries, the area was part of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires.

🕌 Ottoman Period (14th–19th centuries)
• The Islamization of the local population was gradual and uneven.

• The Pomaks remained as isolated rural communities in mountainous areas.
