The rāga saga is a series that acts as a cultural collectiva of our favourite artists from all over, Each raga is an array of melodic structures with musical motifs, considered in the Indian tradition to have the ability to "colour the mind" and affect the emotions of the audience and this journey (raga) comes from this deep digger @jai_maa

"Jai Maa" is a lovely and simple phrase that calls to mind the creative forces in the universe – and more specifically, our acknowledgement and gratitude to them. Even more interesting, it calls to mind the feminine forces, which not only give birth to new things, but can also effect change in the old ones. ‘Ma’ is a word for ‘mother’ and in this context refers to the universal Goddess … powerful, protective, creative, effective. So, ‘jai ma’ could be translated as ‘great gratitude to the divine Mother. May her power be victorious over all obstacles.’”

Jai Maa always loved music of all kinds and cultures. It was only in his late teenage years in Highschool when music was more prominent in his life. He started to listen to all sorts of music when he went for a weekly journey to a very large library where he found things like the Orb, the Future Sound of London, Brian Eno etc. At that same time since Internet was just becoming more mainstream, he downloaded – at that same library - a free music program called Fasttracker, an 8 track ms-dos based platform to produce a tune, it fitted wich ease on 1 floppy disk. For a couple of years he learned how to use it … Finally when started to work, he and his elder brother went for a weekly trip to the big city to listen and buy vinyl, and a lot of it … deep- afro- and techhouse,funk, disco, techno, ambient and fusion and even beyond. Music didn’t have to have a genre label back then, if they liked it, they mixed it together, cross pollinating each other … after some years they struggled to maintain this, with a family life and also financially … Jai Maa kept on following music on the net. It was only till the beginning of 2017 he returned to music intensively, exploring all the new and fresh angles on electronic music. Learning how this digital turntablism is working his magic. He still loves all music, and therefore would like to continue blending all sorts of styles and influences with an open mind and maybe some sort of childish vulnerability…

Jai Maa’s other passion is reading books especially books concerning mysticism, religion, psychology and all things affiliated. Not claiming to grasp everything written, still he has the believe that we’re here to learn how grow more into loving each other, regardless... In the brief moments we have on this lovely planet it’s perhaps our duty to attend to an attitude of gratefulness and constant admiration of all the small wonders that enter our life on a daily bases… to try stay focused on our thoughts and intentions.

Part of the magic of sitar, and Indian Classical music as a whole, is the tradition of how it is passed and taught from one generation to the next.  Indian classical music is one of the oldest forms of classical music still taught and practiced to this day.  It is thanks to my teacher, Paul Livingstone, and his teacher Pandit Ravi Shankar (among many others), that I can perform and combine this tradition into my own music.  My mission in life is to not only hold these musical traditions and grow them, but to also pass them along to others who feel the call dive into such a rich musical culture and tradition.

The sitar melody is based on an Indian Raga called Kirwani, 

In a technical and musical sense, A raga is basically a series of melodic rules.  You use certain notes when ascending, and certain notes when descending.  Certain notes have more weight (or are more important than others) and certain notes always resolve certain ways.  

In a more energetic definition, a raga is essentially a mood, or emotion.  And there are different ragas for different moods and emotions.  Almost like a living spirit.  And when performing a raga,  the performer is attempting to channel that feeling and spirit and express it musically.  

Raga Kirwani uses the western equivalent to the harmonic minor scale.  And to my ears and feelings,  carries with it a sense of mystery and darkness.  A sort of crying out.
