Sim Nagai specializes in imagined journeys to faraway places. The Belgian beat-maker finds inspiration from where he’s travelled as well as those places he’s yet to visit. Sim finds a connection with the ‘50s music genre of ‘exotica,’ a vintage flavor which aimed to sonically transport its listeners to distant locales. Sim takes on a similar mission with his debut album on Cold Busted, Exotica XL. Its 13 tracks convey rhythmic excursions to leisurely destinations — where palm trees shimmer in the wind and colorful birds fill the sky. Sim’s solid hip hop beat foundations accompany these visions, resulting in a distinctive style to be enjoyed by heads around the world.

The album opens with a familiar chord melody in “The Island” as waves gently crash in the sound-field. Guitars, birdcalls, and subdued drums channel a lazy day on the beach. There’s also the tougher rhythms of “Tropics,” featuring rousing strings and expressive atmospheres that’ll liven things up poolside. “Douglas Firs” proudly wears an inspiration from Twin Peaks on its sleeve, and “Toucan” seamlessly drops Asian-adjacent elements into its melodic stew. Things get jazzy and old school with the NYC-inspired “Body & Soul,” and “Takayama” brings out intricate drum patterns and synth work from Sim’s arsenal. With many more cuts and sounds to discover, Exotica XL is a first class ticket to sunnier vibes.

◆【Stand On The Horizon】紹介文

現代音楽から電子音楽、またそれらに関わる現代アートや舞台音楽などを中心に幅広く活動を続ける作曲家Hiromu Yamaguchi、2013年に自身名義でSpeechからリリースされた1stアルバム『Chairs of Grass』以来となる、クラブサウンドを取り入れたUtzho名義での1stアルバム『Stand On The Horizon』が完成！

その経歴からも分かるように、音楽のみならずアート、また演劇やコンテンポラリーダンスなどを含む舞台といったジャンルとの関係も深く、それがサウンドデザインにおける繊細さやダイナミクスを、また要所で感じられるエキゾチックさや多国籍感を本アルバムから感じ取ることが出来る。

美しいメロディー展開と起伏に富んだリズムに広大な情景が目の前に広がるような感覚に陥るM2「Souvenir From Artificial Lake」。本作におけるリードトラックと言えるM4「Dancing Into The Tunnel」は、細かく刻まれたハイハットに導かれるように叩かれる疾走感あるリズムと優美なメロディーラインが渾然一体となり、まるで雄大なシベリア大陸を横断していかのような気分を味合える。タイトなビートに無国籍感漂うサウンドが魅力のM5「Running Without Sound」、また優しい風が吹き込むように奏でられる気持ちの良いギターなど叙情的なサウンドが軽やかなリズムと絡み展開されるM7「Wind From The Earth」をはじめ、全編が１つの物語のように描かれている様が特徴となっいる。

「通常遠く眺めるしかない地平線のうえに突然立たされてしまったような不思議な感覚をタイトルにしました。このアルバムが制作されたコロナ禍初期においての、歴史の裂け目に立っているような感覚です」と名付けられた本作『Stand On The Horizon』、多様な感覚に浸りながらじっくり聴いて欲しい魅惑のアルバムとして帰結している。
アートワークには写真家・カズキヒロ氏の作品を使用。


◆プロフィール  Utzho（Hiromu Yamaguchi）

大学在学時より現代音楽の作曲を始める。
西洋楽器での作品と並行して、薩摩琵琶をはじめ邦楽器を用いた作品を作曲。
国際現代琵琶楽会の演奏会などで作品を発表する。
2007年、凛アートプロジェクト主催の公演にテーマ作曲家として取り上げられ、サントリーホール小ホールにおいて「音楽展～作曲家・山口紘～」が開催される。
2010年、トーキョーワンダーサイト主催EXPERIMENTAL SOUND, ART & PERFORMANCE FESTIVALに、メディア・パフォーマンス作品「無数の終焉／終演」で入選。
大学学部卒業後、コンピューターを使用したElectronic Musicの作曲や即興演奏を始める。
2010年、アイルランドの電子音楽祭sonic vigilに電子音楽作品「The leaf was uprooted」を出品。
2011年より、blanClass（横浜）、explosion tokyo（西麻布）、空宇宙室（横浜）などの現代アートやコンテンポラリーダンスなどのパフォーマンスを中心としたアートプロジェクトにおいて作品発表やライブを行う。大学院芸術学研究科では、イタリアの現代作曲家ルイジ・ノーノ（Luigi Nono）を研究。また研究の一環としてノーノの作品「Post-Prae-Ludium per Donau」の日本初演をふくむレクチャーコンサートを開催。
2012年、explosion tokyoにおいて、サウンド・インスタレーション「供養する人間たち」を中心とした単独の展覧会を開催。また空宇宙室での実験音楽の定期公演企画「The Port Program N°8」を監修する。その他、演劇・コンテンポラリーダンス（Antikame?、singing dog、Rie Tashiro、水越朋）などの舞台音楽と音響を多数担当していく。
2013年からサウンドアーティストの中川敏光氏と共同で配信リリースとライブ企画を中心としたレーベルSpeechを主宰、Speechから1stアルバム「Chairs of Grass」を発表する。
2015年、Speech + explosion tokyo「House Beats - 攪拌する家」（現代アート・ライブ企画）に共同主催・出演。
2018年、AYATORI「身体の岸辺」(ダンス公演）音楽・インタラクティブシステムを、また Antikame? 「じくりじくりと蝕まれていく」（演劇）音楽・音響を担当する。以後、舞台音楽のサウンドトラックや自身の作品を多数配信リリース。
2021年4月、singing dog 「crash～M銀行人質事件～」（演劇）の音楽・音響を担当。
そして2021年9月、Utzho名義の1stアルバム「Stand on the Horizon」をPROGRESSIVE FOrMよりリリースする。

Over a decade in the game, DJing festivals and clubs throughout the South Pacific, Curtis is no stranger to mixing a variety of sounds within the everchanging landscape of the underground electronic music scene and since began his own catalogue, with his first release featured on Teethclippers VA001 ( @teeth-clippers ). 

Driven to start a brand that allows DJs and Artists to explore the dance sounds they enjoy most with no limits, this mix is a testament to what insession is all about and a great way to end the 2021 season.

Lakeboon - Insession 011

iiP is a solo project by musician, sound designer and multi-artist Setsuya Kurotaki.

His latest single is a work inspired by artist Ichi Tashiro's solo exhibition, "Serendipity".

A number of sounds were collected in Ichi’s studio.
It is a collage of sounds from his creative roots in Hong Kong, Paris, and New York.

The coupling track, “nuances”, which was used in the
noir kei ninomiya 2022 S/S Collection, was the song through which Ichi first came to know of Kurotaki.

The cover artwork is based on a new work that will be exhibited at Gallery COMMON.
It is a work born from the serendipitous encounter between an artist and a musician.


[iiP / Setsuya KUROTAKI] Setsuya's sphere of activity is broad and varied - music direction for domestic and international fashion shows,
sound branding for commercial facilities, sound design for websites, as well as composing for film and various sound installations.
So far his work has taken him to all the key locations around the world - Paris, London, New York, Milano as well as Taiwan, Shanghai, Hong Kong and of course his hometown Tokyo.
Setsuya often features as a performing musician in studio recording and live stage situations and tours nationwide as a DJ / Music Selector.

Ichi Tashiro (b. 1984, Ehime, Japan) is a self-taught collage artist. Tashiro previously lived in New York and Hong Kong before returning to Tokyo where he is currently based.
His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across New York, Hong Kong, Paris, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Belgium, Denmark, Singapore, and Tokyo, as well as art fairs such as Art Basel Hong Kong, ASIA Now Paris, Art Taipei, and Art Stage Singapore.
