Anjunabeats is pleased to release the self-titled debut album from JODA, aka Jono Grant and Darren Tate.

JODA are a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. Both together and apart, Jono Grant and Darren Tate have been there, done that, and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score, and nearing 100 singles speak to output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalog.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer, and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total), and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off around the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy. Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?”

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all around – not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

For now, Jono Grant and Darren Tate are simply happy that a project that began almost when neither of them was looking, in the midst of lockdowns, has turned out exactly and as fully as they imagined. Unforced, unhurried, and only done for love: this is a passion project of the best kind.

“It's one of the great things about doing this job: that we get to do this job!” concludes Darren Tate, beaming. “Jono and I love making music, we get on really well together, so we have fun doing it. We naturally have perfectionist instincts, but the vibe is the most important thing. So this is also rough around the edges in all the right ways."

“It absolutely is a passion project,” affirms Jono Grant. “The other thing was, of course, we've done this over the pandemic. So it was cathartic. We were lucky enough to be able to work. And this was therapy of the best kind.”

The evolution of Damion 'Damo' Houchen, a.k.a. Genix, continues with a new EP and live brand, Warehouse55, that explores Damo's rave & club roots. 'Warehouse55 Volume 1' is out now on Anjunabeats.

It’s been an enthralling three years for Damo. In April 2019, he took the Guinness World Record for the highest altitude DJ set above sea level at Mount Everest Base Camp, 5,525 meters high. Glacier-shattering techno record ‘Ba55 Camp’ followed, inspired by his journey.

2021 saw the release of the ‘Praha EP' and his long-awaited debut artist album ‘199X’. A love letter to rave culture, '199X' showcased his diverse sound; from soulful vocal exploits ‘Numb’ (featuring LYCA) and Space Terrace-minded ‘Be Free’, to high octane anthems ‘Higher & Higher’ and ‘What You Do To Me’. It found eclectic support, from Oliver Heldens and Diplo, to Anja Scheider, Étienne de Crécy, Rex The Dog and Alan Fitzpatrick, the latter of which Genix later remixed on Anjunadeep.

While making '199X’, Damo was also listening to a lot of early chillout staples. After finishing the record, Damo reworked the entire thing - the result was '199X' (Chill Edition)', released in April 2022 and featuring chillout, ambient and drum & bass remixes from the man himself. 

A return to the club music that made him an in-demand DJ, Warehouse55 embraces the harder side of his sound. EP 1 kicks off with ‘Ba55 I5land’. Supported by Above & Beyond, Joseph Capriati, Marco Carola, Joris Voorn, Chris Lake and more, 'Ba55 I5land' is a sonic ode to his Everest trip and has proved to be a key part of Damo's sets over the summer, including closing out the Saturday of Group Therapy Weekender at The Gorge and the launch of 'Warehouse55' at Night Tales, London.

First heard on Fatum's Worldwide 10, ‘Your Destiny’ throws elements of Detroit techno into the mix, while EP closer ‘Acid Machine’ lives up to its name in suitably helter-skelter fashion.

'Warehouse55 Volume 1' is out now. Next up on Damo's touring schedule, appearances on the Anjunabeats stages at Creamfields and EH1 Festival, plus a sold out 'Warehouse55' rave in Los Angeles as part of the ABGT500 celebrations in October, alongside Bexxie and Fehrplay.

Nico Parisi heads up our next BP release with the deep grooving Cacaooh featuring two sublime remixes from Steve Sai and Audio Noir. Nico is fresh from a wonderful remix on Chantola's Casablanca which is proving popular among many. Always exploring the progressive sound and pushing the boundaries, Nico continues to impress with his intricately perfected constructions. On the gig front he has had a whirlwind Summer season with the highlight of course going to Tomorrowland, but he has also made appearances at Pukkelpop and Legacy festival.

The Original Mix intros with a nice chunky kick as subtle percussions begin to form up. The bass line delivers a cool rhythmic groove while various sounds begin to form up adding a surreal twist to the track. The break descends into silence before those soft synths start to fade in alongside the bassline to start us back on this deep progressive trek. Great stuff from Nico that will turn a few heads for sure.

Greek DJ and producer Steve Sai steps up first on remix duty and delivers another of his sublime treks deep into the progressive sound. Steve's last outing - Drops, proved very popular and gained great reviews and lots of playtime as well as chart positions. Always a pleasure to listen to his work and no doubt we'll be hearing much more in the future. Steve takes us deep into progressive territory on his remix as a super tight arrangement takes shape. Beautifully crafted drum patterns keep the rhythm moving as a probing bassline ensures the groove goes deep. Cool chord stabs litter the sound and deliver a house vibe as hypnotic synth arps tease in the background. The break takes us into a surreal space that mesmerizes before being thrust back into the main sound for the duration, wonderful stuff yet again. 

Audio Noir is up next at the remix helm and yet again he pulls out all the stops. His much anticipated second studio album - Artificial Star, dropped recently and quickly gained a lot of attention from across the board. A very diverse collection of tracks covering everything from chilled grooves to full on dark progressive, there is a lot happening within the album. Definitely worth checking out which will not disappoint. The remix sets off with some nifty drums led by a cool chunky kick and metallic sounding percussions that stand out brilliantly and giving off an almost industrial vibe. A super charged bassline drives the track as swirling pads and soft acid shots float across the groove. A much fuller acid line develops and is the perfect companion for that superb bassline. The acid line becomes the main focus as it weaves its way through the sound adding layers to create a fantastic display of acid goodness. Brilliant stuff from down under once more, a definite must have track.
