Above & Beyond deliver their first original instrumental track of 2021 with ‘Screwdriver’. Jono, Tony, and Paavo flip the script on their established club sound with this fan-favorite ID from the trio’s sold-out Group Therapy 450 festival in London last September.

Blissful and energetic, ‘Screwdriver’ is a tour through trance build-ups, acid, breakbeat, and 90s-flavored piano house. 

‘Screwdriver’ comes off the back of the announcement that Above & Beyond will partner with Cercle to present a special, intimate Livestream set on top of Piedra del Peñol in Guatape, Colombia.

The trio close out their 2021 tour schedule, which included sold-out shows at The Drumsheds, London, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre, with a date at Brooklyn’s Avant Gardner on December 28. You can also catch the boys at Big Night Live, Boston and Lights All Night Festival, Dallas this festive season. Final release tickets are available now.

Meet JODA: a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. 

Jono Grant and Darren Tate have history. Both together and apart, they have been there, done that and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score and nearing 100 singles speak to an output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalogue.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early Noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total) and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off round the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy.

Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?” 

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all round ­– not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

It was as if this pair of young-minded veterans were finding themselves all over again. Aptly enough, that fed into 'We Find Ourselves', featuring Grant's own vocals.

“Darren had the idea of using the ARP Odyssey for the bass sound,” explains Grant, “and it sounds very retro. We were listening to stuff like the Drive soundtrack by Kavinsky. So the tempo of the track actually comes from that style of music. We wouldn't have ended up at 110 BPM if it wasn't for listening to that kind of music."

JODA, aka Jono Grant (Above & Beyond) and Darren Tate (DT8 Project, Jurgen Vries), release the final single taken from their self-titled debut album ‘JODA’, ‘Closer’.

‘Closer’ leans into pop with dark, electro undercurrents and features vocals from singer-songwriter Robyn Sherwell, who has previously been championed by Jo Whiley, Lauren Laverne and Huw Stevens across the BBC Radio network. Released on July 29, ‘Closer’ explores themes of loss, anguish and strength.

JODA is the new passion project from Jono Grant and Darren Tate. As dance music mainstays, the pair have always been in each other’s orbit. Jono Grant is one third of Above & Beyond, one of electronic music’s most influential acts, and Darren Tate is a producer and songwriter with 12 top 40 UK hits and three appearances on Top of the Pops.

The pair first unearthed their chemistry in 2003, when they produced “Let The Light Shine In” and “Nocturnal Creatures” together. They reconnected in 2019 when Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats under his DT8 alias. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary The Last Glaciers, and teamed up with Tate to write it. The musical lightning struck immediately, and once the score was written the chemistry felt too good to lose. When lockdown hit, Tate and Grant entered a mutual creative bubble, and co-wrote a flurry of synth-wave dark-pop electronica. Enter JODA.

One of dance music’s most enigmatic figures returns home to Anjunabeats.
GRAMMY-nominated producer Mat Zo is back with his third artist album set for release in October: ‘Illusion Of Depth’.

He broke onto the scene in 2008 and has been causing an uproar ever since. In the early naughties, he penned Anjunabeats classics like ‘The Lost’ and ‘Synapse Dynamics’ which were far ahead of their time. They were followed by the likes of ‘Superman’, ‘The Sky’ and ‘Rebound’ (with Arty). He pushed the Anjunabeats sound to the mainstage, racking up spins from Pete Tong, Axwell and Armin van Buuren.

It was his GRAMMY-nominated debut album ‘Damage Control’ that fully showcased Mat’s avant-garde approach in 2013. Featuring break-out hit ‘Easy’ with close friend Porter Robinson, the track took Mat mainstream: a Radio 1 A-List addition, Sirius XM BPM listing, a #1 Billboard Heatseeking record, an Essential Mix of the year nomination and, ultimately, a GRAMMY nod for best dance and electronic recording.

Since then, Mat has grown his own stable. Self-releasing his second LP in 2016, ‘Self Assemble’, via Mad Zoo, Mat’s imprint nurtured a new generation of eclectic, genre-agnostic creators.

He’s stayed close with Anjunabeats through that time, joining Above & Beyond for shows at Madison Square Garden and Huntington Beach and Anjunabeats label shows around North America.

We come full circle with ‘Illusion Of Depth’, a modern homage to the sounds that made him a star.

“I started working on Illusion Of Depth because I wanted to make a body of work that was cohesive. I’m usually known for being all over the place, but I wanted to make an album that had unifying qualities. In this case, partly it’s the tempo. Everything on the album is in the 124-128 bpm range, but within that constraint I still managed to be all over the place stylistically. There’s also a lot more live/non-digital elements on this album than my previous work. I was getting really tired of how clean everything is in this corner of dance music. Above all else I wanted to make an album with grit, texture and attitude. I wanted to make a fuck you statement to the safe, sugary, fluffy world of post EDM trance.”
“A big part of the conception of the album came from working with Olan. She’s a highly skilled singer, songwriter and producer and we’ve known each other for years. We had been in the studio working on a bunch of material before this, and that helped us grow a common musical identity. When it came to writing this album we were already comfortable with each other. This allowed the songs on the album to be honest, opposed to a bunch of toplines plastered on top of already formed tracks. Every song we wrote together is personal, sincere, and holds a lot of meaning for both of us.” - Mat Zo

Prepare for another helter-skelter trip through a pick-n’-mix of styles. ‘Illusion Of Depth’ begins with the brash ‘In Media Res’. Next, it’s Zo’s ode to 90’s warehouse techno: ‘The Next Chapter’ featuring legendary jungle/D&B MC GQ. Then, all of a sudden, ‘Love Songs’ and some French, filter house.

The album introduces Atlanta-based Olan, a singer and producer that Mat has worked with for several years. There’s a nod to classic rave culture and The Chemical Brothers with her vocals on ‘Problems’ while closing track ‘Begin Again’ is a cinematic rock crescendo.

‘Illusion of Depth’ will be released October 9 on Anjunabeats. ‘Problems’, the new single is out on Friday, July 24.
