We're excited to present a new project from a producer who has achieved legendary status over his many years with us. Meramek is the deep house alias of none other than Oliver Smith, a man with countless fan favourites on both Anjunadeep and Anjunabeats. The debut Meramek EP sees Olie channeling his varied musical influences into three tracks of vibrant, contemporary house music. 

Featuring in Jody Wisternoff's "Anjunadeep 05" mix, "Feeling" is built around a sharp bouncing bassline and infectious vocal snippets, wound together by some of Smith's trademark shimmering atmospherics. 

If "Feeling" is a sun-soaked terrace anthem, then "Maybe" is a genuine peak time stormer, complete with a heavy low end groove, woozy soundscapes and crisp, shuffling percussion. Picking up early support from a host of underground DJs, this one's set to do some dancefloor damage. 

Things get moodier still with "FWD". Garage influenced drums make way for a pounding bassline, accompanied by subtle stabs and a breakdown of arpeggios, vocal cuts and drifting sirens to round off a bold and exciting debut EP for Meramek.

Meramek - FWD

The edit master returns for round two. There are plenty of sultry, downtempo numbers on The Revenge's forthcoming album 'Love That Will Not Die' – including, somewhat incredibly, a guest spot from Sister Sledge – but “Another Light” pushes the clutch to ‘full sleaze’. The track evokes the black leather, flashing red LEDs and vague sense of danger encompassed within any number of 80s nightdrive fantasies. It’s a smooth ride, and it sees release 30th March on his own Roar Groove.

Australia's Lancelot made a welcome return to Anjunadeep recently with the excellent ‘Connection’, one of the stand out tracks from our North American tour earlier this year. Now British duos Mak & Pasteman and Outboxx provide a double header of UK sounds on a dancefloor focused remix package. 

After cuts on Breach’s NakedNaked label, and Redlight’s Lobster Boy Records, Mak & Pasteman add their heavy warehouse techno twist to the original, warping the vocal sample around a surging acidic bassline and pulsating club groove. 

Bristol’s Outboxx take things deeper, cutting the vocal sample up over a warm bouncing bassline and lush pads, whilst the rising synth melodies and guitar riff from the original return in a mystical breakdown.

I often find it hard to separate the emotional and methodical while making music. So tonight I challenged myself to make a song in an hour (it ended up being an hour and twenty seven minutes); working quickly and without developing the emotional attachments to sounds and ideas that would otherwise keep a production hidden in the deep and dark depths of the hard drive, silently hoping that maybe, just maybe, it might just one day see the light of day. In case you're interested, I was drinking an Estrella beer and eating blueberries and little pieces of cheese.

Lowered Standards

Following some major releases of late, Hypercolour return to championing undiscovered talent, this time in the form of the prodigiously talented 18 year-old J. Wiltshire. 

In releasing on Hypercolour, J.Wiltshire follows in the footsteps of his good friend and fellow ‘Winch’ crew member Bareskin, whose recent Eyes EP caused a number of heads to turn in the direction of the Hampshire. These young producers from Winchester are the architects of a mature sound, defying the logic that music with a strong level of maturity takes years and years to perfect. Showcasing a sound across three tracks that harnesses an inert level of depth, the How It Is EP also sees J.Wiltshire take vocal control on each track. 

The title track is a deep-house lament that bubbles with intent. Soft driving basslines rub up against claps and a kick that drives the tune at a steady pace. The build is slow and patient, allowing the repeating vocal and backing synth line to slowly crank the tension of the tune to its full level. Cloaked in subtlety and with a beautifully understated drop in the mid-section, it’s a track which is both capable of delivering an awesome headphone experience as well as a 4am club moment. 

The other two tracks on the EP keep to the mantra laid down by the first. Closer is reminiscent of early Maya Jane Coles releases and again features another pitch-perfect mournful vocal, delivered with enough echo and restraint as not to engulf the track. Finally, Take It Off Mind offers more of an ambient texture in the first half of the track, with soft cymbals and more fragile tones before the synth line becomes fractured enough to tailor it to the dance floor in the second half, which then lands back into a beautifully soft and textured ending. 

J.Wiltshire has produced a sound on the How It Is EP that will resonate strongly with clubbers and connoisseurs alike. The fact he’s managed this at 18 makes him an exceptionally strong bet for the future.
