“It all began when one of us was Leaving Laurel”.

For Pierce and Gordon of Leaving Laurel, their music is a story of an old friendship that over many years, almost accidentally, blossomed into a musical collaboration.  Friends on the internet first, and eventually roommates in Los Angeles, the pair spent years together making their own separate brands of dance music, long before ever collaborating with one another. Gordon was one half of bass heavy duo Botnek, whilst Pierce found fame and toured the world with his solo project.

One day in Laurel Canyon, California, the pair were sharing their own unfinished music with one another. Pierce had an idea for a demo of Gordon’s, which spawned an impromptu writing session lasting the rest of the day.  Elated by what had just happened, they continued to write together over the coming weeks, but just as they were getting new momentum, Pierce had to head back to his home on the east coast.  The final song they wrote together before his flight was called ‘Leaving Laurel’. The music Pierce and Gordon made together is rich with emotion, densely packed with atmosphere and often featured Gordon’s own gentle vocals. 

Pierce always envisioned the music they made together in California as an album, and after having released many of their early songs over the past year on Anjunadeep, they set out to finish everything they had started during that time. In revisiting the rest of their ideas from that era, they had realized - it all felt like one moment in time. One feeling. One chapter. The pair finished their debut album at the start of 2021, just prior to a horrible tragedy.

Pierce passed away in April of this year after a tragic struggle with his mental health. This album is dedicated to his memory, and has come to represent much more than two friends making music together in the Laurel Canyon neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The album announcement comes with today’s release of ‘Winter In The Woods’, a track inspired by the duo’s time isolated in the woods of Connecticut & Vermont. Pierce’s struggles were very private, and with this album Gordon and Pierce’s brother and manager Griff want to let the world know simply this: 

It’s ok to not be ok.  

It’s for anyone who can relate to his pain, and to know you are not alone.

Jon Gurd returns to Anjunadeep with the announcement of his latest album ‘Phoenix’, out on April 8th.

‘Phoenix’ follows the release of Jon’s acclaimed album ‘Lion’, out summer 2020, which reached #3 on the iTunes Dance chart and gained support from tastemaker DJs including Solomun, Stephen Bodzin, Adriatique, Ida Engberg and Shadow Child. Whilst ‘Lion’ explored themes of loss ‘Phoenix’ takes inspiration from themes of rebirth, marking the start of a new chapter.

“Phoenix was written during the UK lockdown last year. When things at home got to a pretty low point I asked myself what is the most empowering thing I can do right now and the answer was to make a new album. I’ve always wanted to make an album called Phoenix. I like the idea of rebirth and coming back stronger after big challenges.”

A respected selector and producer, Jon came through the UK underground in the early 2000s as resident DJ at the legendary Slinky in Bournemouth, warming up for the likes of Mauro Picotto and Paul Van Dyk. His early productions were championed by Paul Woolford, Sasha, Lee Burridge, James Zabiela, and Sander Kleinenberg, and Jon soon found himself travelling the world performing alongside the artists he’d been opening for not long before.

Following the release of the first single ‘Emergence’, Jon Gurd now shares the second single ‘Open’ ahead of the album release. Leading with characteristic bold basslines and cascading melodies, Jon showcases his intricate production techniques reminiscent of Jon Hopkins, Jacques Green and Bonobo.

“A lot of the album is about getting close to the bone of feeling, a lot like Lion was in a way, but this time trying to translate old subconscious memories into feeling. Memories of euphoria when I just started clubbing 20 years ago. The excitement of discovering and dancing to music for the first time. The feeling of connection on the dance floor with people you’ve never met before. The after parties, the whole thing.”

In celebration of the album release, Jon will be playing a headline show at Colours Hoxton, London on the 8th of April, following successful sets at London’s iconic venues Fabric and Printworks.

‘Phoenix’ is the latest album to be released on Anjunadeep, described by Billboard as “one of dance music’s ultimate tastemaker labels”. The label is known for discovering talents like Lane 8, Dusky, Yotto, and Ben Böhmer.

Ryan Davis shares the second single from his upcoming twelve-track album 'Through The Mirror Glass’. ‘Waialeale’ is out now on Reflections.

Inspired by the movies he grew up watching with soundtracks by James Horner, Thomas Newman and Jóhann Jóhannsson, 'Through The Mirror Glass’ is Ryan's first full-length foray into cinematic electronic music.

The album’s second single, ‘Waialeale’, takes inspiration and samples from an island on Hawaii. Its micro-climate means clouds get stuck between the volcanoes and mountains, creating the most humid place on earth. As the track opens, you can hear the island breathing, and the tinkering piano and spaced out synths are an extension of the magic the island holds.

Ryan Davis teamed up with Anjunadeep for the first time in 2016 with a series of EPs showcasing the melodic, down-tempo side to his artistry. He’d long wanted to create a full-length project for Anjuna, so when Above & Beyond launched Reflections in 2022, Davis knew he’d found the perfect home for his next album. “With electronic music I have access to a never-ending palette of sounds,” Davis says. “This album has been inside me for ages, but computers just weren’t good enough. I didn’t know how to arrange notes to create an orchestra or to record a violin, but now Spitfire Audio has built these incredible samples. I have BBC One’s orchestra at my fingertips.”

Ultimately, Ryan Davis hopes 'Through The Mirror Glass' will act as a sonic space to reflect and hold fragile memories.
