The Wowse is a Los Angeles two-piece who blend theatricality into indie rock, fast-paced surf style romps, touching ballads, and bonfire folk songs that stick with you. Somewhere between Shelley Duvall, Concrete Blonde, Big Star, Van Dyke Parks, good taste and absurdity dwells Nadine’s tongue in cheek lyricism and Mark’s melodic songwriting. It’s hard to liken them to a contemporary artist – The 5.6.7.8’s, Deerhoof, and perhaps Ariel Pink come to mind – but this solid four star debut album inspires repeat listening.
“POMPOUS ASS” comes at you from subtle directions within a richly complex tapestry of instrumentation, with Nadine’s voice as constant friend. Many fans find themselves transported. We dare say that Jon Brion would approve
