In My Mind and In My Car

This is a remix I made for my college class: Introduction to Digital Music (MUSI UN2205 at Columbia University). I was given the freedom to make anything I wanted, and I wanted another shot at making a remix project too. 

As a gemstone miner would say "you are either 5 feet away from $10000 or 10000 feet away from $5", and this time I would say I am 5 feet away from $10000.

If you are ever in Columbia University, I really recommend this class, Professor Anna Meadors is awesome.

Performance day is finally here – and our excitement has amplified tenfold. Tonight beholds the world-first performance between the London Contemporary Orchestra and Actress – which we have had the honour to commission and curate alongside the LCO, and will also broadcast live from the Barbican tonight. Today, we are celebrating with a Debut from notable cellist, composer, producer and LCO soloist, Oliver Coates.

His Upstepping mini-album opus – forthcoming on Moshi Moshi's contemporary classical and experimental label, PRAH Recordings – illustrates Coates' deeply contrasting interests in music. Having formerly collaborated with Jonny Greenwood, Mica Levi and now also Actress, and listing his direct influence from the likes of early Orbital and Photek, electronic reflections can easily be traced in the instrumental lyricism and classically versed composition patterns of each of Upstepping's eight tracks. On being asked about "Timelapse (Walrus)", Coates explained to us: "I was living in a hotel for a month because our flat got flooded, and listening to the chromatic steps of happy / sinister early nineties techno. Then I was taking cello harmonics and cutting off the fronts and making sample keyboards out of them. Everything that sounds like it could be a piano or keys starts from a piece of cello residue. The spoken audio is a small child saying ‘small child gets scared to death’. The body of the cello makes everything woody with the colours. I like techno made out of spruce."

Oliver Coates "Timelapse (Walrus)" - Boiler Room Debuts

Premiered on March 2nd, 2017, this piece was written to address my personal thoughts on the many divides plaguing the world. I want the listener to really think about whether or not there has ever been a permanent resolution to the problems that are "resurfacing."

Anna Meadors is a composer, saxophonist, electronic music producer and educator. Her music is inspired by nature walks and small details, birds, slightly uneven pulses, the buzzy stillness of bodies of water, and joyful improvisation. Her saxophone playing has been described as “potently feral” (American Pancake) and “sprawling across the walls and dripping onto the floor all John Zorn-like” (Outside Left).

She has compositions on albums by Party of One (Madefor records), clarinetist Andy Hudson (Potenza Records), percussionist Evan Chapman, and Consortium Works (people places records). As a saxophonist, she is lead soloist in the jazz-rock trio Joy on Fire, which has been called “a thrill of high voltage jazz ‘n’ roll” (All About Jazz) and has been featured twice on Bob Boilen’s All Songs Considered, NPR. Anna has engineered and co-produced the last three Joy on Fire albums (Procrastination Records), has filmed and edited two of their recent music videos, and is currently working on a solo saxophone and electronics album.

Anna is the Assistant Director of Columbia University’s Computer Music Center and a lecturer of electronic music composition and production in Columbia’s Music Department. She graduated from Peabody Conservatory with a B.M. in saxophone performance, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with an M.M. in Composition, and recently finished her Ph.D. at Princeton University in Music Composition.
