A familiar favourite, Deft, steps up with his second EP on Hooversound, featuring a VIP remix of one of his original songs taken from his 2020 ‘Burna’ EP.

Defts ‘Burna’ EP back in 2020 set the tone perfectly for Hooversound, it being the second release on the imprint following Hyroglific and Sinistarr’s almighty ‘BS6’. Deft’s hybrid artistic style of production sat perfectly within the launch of Hooversound as he went on to rise steadily within the underground electronic scene. Fast forward four years, Deft returns to Hooversound with an equally impressive follow up, entitled ‘Two Years’.

Yip Wong aka Deft has been producing music for nearly a decade. Within that time he has crafted a signature style using elements of dance, cinematic sound design, hip hop, jungle, footwork and 140. This enigmatic style of production has led him to release on 20/20 LDN, Exit, 1985 Music, Critical Music and more. His release schedule alongside his ever evolving sound has gained the attention of not only London and UK listeners, but fans worldwide.

Defts new ‘Two Years’ EP on Hooversound once again sees the talented producer drawing elements from 140, footwork and jungle, all laced with his ability to create immersive atmospheres and intricate percussion. With "Somnambulism", I invite listeners into a dreamlike exploration of the subconscious, where reality blurs with the surreal. This body of my work weaves together heavy basslines, haunting melodies, powerful rhythms, and atmospheric textures to evoke the feeling of wandering through a world just beyond the edge of wakefulness—dreaming with eyes wide open. The concept reflects that paradoxical state of being fully awake and aware, yet lost in a dream-like experience. It's as if the mind is caught between two worlds—one grounded in the physical, and the other in the realm of the intangible and unknown. Each track captures the transient emotions, fragmented thoughts, and vivid imagery that emerge in this in-between space, where the boundaries of reality and illusion dissolve, and both clarity and confusion coexist. It’s a journey through the subconscious, where one is both lucid and adrift at once—feeling the weight of the world while also drifting through the depths of an inner dream.

The artist's ability to seamlessly weave various genres brings a dynamic range of elements to the table, showcasing a production style that defies classification.
'Rush' kicks off the EP with an insanely catchy stripped-back bassline, hop-scotching percussion, and elegant discordant synths peppered with dope vocals. 'Future Step' fuses techno, bass, and breakbeat, veering into madness with its revving engine sound effects and slick dub samples. It's a Lewis Hamilton-approved banger. 'Resilience' shines with warmth from the start, featuring beautiful vocal samples that give way to a world-class heavy bass track. The oxymoronic tension between soft and big is a standout feature.'Check One' showcases tripped-out vocal samples and a clipped bassline, forming a dance-heavy groove with its 4/4 floor beat and subtle background breaks.

PREMIERE: Sept7 - Resilience (Kessler Remix) [DMC028]

"It feels like at the moment, we're lost in the long dark tunnel. Plenty of dance music seems to operate in a revivalist form, within a regression cycle, it's hard to pinpoint the exact sound of "now" without it referencing other points in history.

"We're trapped in 20th century culture on higher definition screens", poses Mark Fisher in a seminal lecture, and thus, exposes Berardi's concept of the Slow Cancellation of the Future. "Nothing ever really dies, but that's not good". In 1992 it was impossible to imagine the shape of music 6 months into the future, so why are we now constantly going back to these genres?

My aim with this release was to try and participate in the legacy of the Hardcore Continuum within the sonic context of the current world. A hyper-online, overstimulated landscape where our attention is constantly invaded by notification after notification, stimulus after stimulus. I try to materialise this by reshaping sharp noise into pulse, genre staples like the breakbeat get torn apart and forced into a brand new skeleton, and riot-invoking grime chants are repurposed into music set for a bleak now. Jungle, Dub, Grime, Garage, they are all present here, but the heavy gravitational pull of their legacies presents to me as a black hole I've tried to encapsulate in this EP.
