This CD is based on material gathered during the course of a project called Sata suomalaista äänimaisemaa (One Hundred Finnish Soundscapes), a three-year (2004-2006) research programme for collecting soundscapes within the geographical borders of Finland. To date, this is the most comprehensive attempt, in Finland, to explore the qualitative aspects of the sound environment and the ways in which the people living within their soundscapes experience their environments. The primary aim was to increase awareness on how significant soundscapes can be. The project has stressed how important soundscapes are for the well-being of com- munities, and how multifaceted they are.

The main organiser of the project was the Finnish Society for Acoustic Ecology. The Finnish soundscape project was modelled after a similar project in Japan (100 Soundscapes of Japan). The Japanese project did, however, concentrate more on the conservation of soundscapes. The purpose of this project was not to find the best or the purest Finnish soundscapes. The purpose was rather to identify a wide and varied range of descriptions about soundscapes within the borders of Finland.

The material was collected through a competition which began in the autumn of 2004. One of the organisers, the Finnish Literature Society, has a long tradition of arranging these kinds of writing competitions, and they are very well known amongst Finns. People were asked to write about personally or communally meaningful sonic environments. The participants were asked to answer this question: “What is the most meaningful sound environment in your life or in your community? Why is it important and where can it be found?”

Nearly 800 very diverse descriptions, memories and short notes were submitted. The writers were young, middle-aged and elderly, living both in the countryside and in cities. Their descriptions covered the sounds of nature, human beings and technology. Among other things, they dealt with places of importance to the participants, the totality of the sounds in such places and individual sounds in various environments, as well as the conservation of soundscapes.

The CD includes sounds selected from the suggestions sent to the competition. The TAMK University of Applied Sciences (Dept. of Art and Media) has coordinated the recording process. Whenever possible, the person who suggested a particular soundscape has also been present in the actual field recordings.

Hopefully this CD will encourage people to not only listen to the sound- scapes presented here, but to others as well, be they near or far. The CD serves as a guide and a source of inspiration, and hopefully some of the meaningful soundscapes described here can be heard not only today, but also in the future.

"Soundscape Stories from Finland is well recorded giving site- specific attention to detail relevant to the place. The near and far and panoramic movement is exciting in hearing these places for the first time. One feels in the sound as much as can be in a CD. The disc more than achieves its aim, to communicate the Finnish soundscapes to the near and far,  but also through the years, now and in the future. Listening to the disc in Australia was a treat from all these points of view, but it's the sounds themselves which linger. One would hope that other countries follow suit with publications of this integrity in sharing their culture through quality researched soundscape recordings such as this. Highly recommended."

Ohjelmassa keruuseen osallistuneet yhdeksän henkilöä kertovat ehdottamastaan äänimaisemasta, sen herättämistä muistoista ja äänten merkityksistä. Vastapainon uudessa podcast-sarjassa Keveät askeleet astutaan ulos tutkijankammioista ja suljetuista äänitysstudioista. Keveät askeleet vievät kuulijan keskelle kohisevia tutkimuskenttiä.

Ensimmäisessä jaksossa kuunnellaan Tampereen vanhan teollisuuslähiö Nekalan muutosta. Kävelyn oppaana toimii tekniikan tohtori, arkkitehti Jenni Partanen, joka on ollut kiinnostunut Nekalasta jo yli vuosikymmenen. Partasta alueessa kiinnostaa sen aluesuunnittelullinen vapaus, joka on synnyttänyt monimuotoisen ja monien toimijoiden entrooppisen, sattumanvaraisen ympäristön.

Keveät askeleet on sarja ohjelmia, joissa äänimaisematutkija Meri Kytö pyytää tutkijoita kävelylle heidän tutkimuksellisille mukavuusalueilleen.
