'Empyrean' is the third in a trilogy of albums on Dronarivm. Whereas Expanses might be evocative of vast landscapes and Harbor the feeling of floating on gentle waves, Empyrean seeks to transcend the Earthly realm altogether. The album differs slightly from the previous two in that piano plays a larger role in many of the tracks, bringing an ethereal modern classical feel to the Green Kingdom sound at times. Although the mood ranges from pensive to lighter pieces, the intent was to provide soundscapes that elevate one's midstate to the clouds above.

‘REDES’ – it means ‘Networks’ in Spanish – may be a departure from Sanfilippo’s usual, piano-led compositions, but it’s no less captivating or thoughtful. Deeply emotional and tender, it’s one of his most profound works to date – nine tracks full of gentle synth washes, soft intricate details, and warm electronic textures.

"I often", Bruno explains, "tackle universal themes in my music, expressing emotions that aren’t easily defined. We have never been as connected to each other as we are at this point in history. Ephemeral but extensive, our bonds have multiplied thanks to social media and new and fascinating technologies; ‘connectivity’, ‘signal’, ‘followers’, ‘crypto’… We are increasingly defined by those connections and bonds, both real and digital, and ‘REDES’ is my deconstruction of that idea"

The music was written and recorded during winter 2021/22 at Onix II Studio, in his mountain house on the outskirts of Barcelona.

I find it absolutely fascinating and, at the same time, truly inspiring thought, that with the untimely passing of Jóhann Jóhannsson in February of 2018 (wow, almost four years ago now!), he still really lives on through the music he made. And not just through his own. And although he left an incredible void, it's not like someone just stepped into his shoes. Instead, a significant number of collaborators and followers that he touched through the years continued to carry his legacy through their own unique sound. His light didn't go out - it just exploded into hundreds of thousands of fragments of many other lights, that are now expanding, forming their gravity, and with time growing larger. And I sort of wonder if that would have happened if it didn't happen the way it already has. That is an absolutely fascinating and truly inspiring thought with which I opened this write-up. In today's track premiere, we have precisely just that. Danish composer Jonas Colstrup worked closely with Jóhann throughout the years, collaborating on scores for the Japanese films Blind Massage (2014) and The Shadow Play (2018). Inspired by the late musician's approach to neo-classical minimalism carried forth with the cinematic elegance, as well as the incredible score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto and Bryce Dessner for The Revenant (Milan, 2015), and contemporary compositions by William Walton and Arvo Pärt, Colstrup gently sculpts a sonic chrysalis of emotion, in which one wants to wait out all current angst. And if this was a blind listening session, you may have even thought I'd uncovered an unreleased Johannsson track, with those scaling chord progressions and the beautiful arrangements performed by the Budapest Art Orchestra and Theatre of Voices. But to be clear, once again, this is not a copy, made from a mould lifted from Jóhann's work. It is an unmatched gorgeous sculpture, on which you may find his imprint, still warm to the touch.

“Throughout history, this expression has been used to describe various ritual group expulsions and the deduction of colonies, particularly with regard to people getting back to nature.
For example, the Italian town of Nocera was founded in the 7th Century BC by inhabitants from Camerinum, who left their ancestral homeland during a so-called Ver Sacrum.
In ancient Rome, during times of calamities such as pandemics, earthquakes, wars, or plagues, they used to devote children born in spring – from the 1st of March to the 30th of April – to the gods Jupiter and Mars. Then, when they turned 20 or 21, these children were required to leave the community to begin new settlements”

Sounding like some long lost, sacred canon, Ver Sacrum – the new album from Bruno Sanfilippo – marks something of a departure for the Barcelona-based pianist and composer. Far more orchestral in nature, there’s a spiritual, quasi-religious force to these pieces; strings swoop and soar, maudlin organs plough slowly, sorrowfully forward, while several sopranos add to the ecclesiastical air. But there’s hope and joy here too, and a childlike playfulness – playing these tensions against each other is what makes Ver Sacrum such an intense, rewarding listen. Inspired and informed by the ancient custom of ritualised expulsions of the same name, one can find the whole spectrum of humanity within these nine pieces: sorrow, loss, love, rebirth, change, hope, and the indefatigable human spirit. “Sallaw” is a Kurdish word that expresses the passing of time, and on this new album the three sound artists have found a way of expressing that notion in music. Four tracks of slowly unfolding ambience make up this collection, each piece named after different months, again in Kurdish. The four sections represent the different seasons and their movement through time.
