Wonderful, honest declaration of independence from fake beauty norms!

Splotches, spills, and stains.  They can evoke shapes, moods, energy, even music.  Yet no one seemed to appreciate their very beauty with the same intuitive, delicate flair as Helen Frankenthaler, who created something fiercely new "between cocktails and dinner," or, more accurately, between the broad shoulders of a relentlessly masculine movement.  Not bad for a saddle-shoed girl a year out of Bennington.

Third Coast International Audio Festival is a nonprofit arts organization that celebrates the art and craft of narrative audio storytelling. Every year, radio-makers from around the world converge in Chicago for a conference that explores the medium, the radio industry, and the creative bounds yet to be explored. AirGo talked with a crew of Chicago producers about their experiences making radio in the city, relationship to the medium, and the stories they're trying to figure out how to tell.

Erisa Apantaku (@erisa_apantaku) is a queer, Black audio producer and uninvited guest on the lands of the Miami, Peoria, Potawatomi peoples, and more. Erisa is the executive producer of South Side Weekly Radio, a hyperlocal podcast accompanying a weekly print newspaper focusing on arts, culture, and politics on Chicago’s South Side.
