My parents were married on the Winter's Solstice, which has been a running joke ever since. They'll celebrate their 60th anniversary on December 21, 2023.  [I originally wrote and recorded this for FAWM in February, but re-recorded this today (with some lyrical tweaks) in honor of their actual anniversary!]

An original song in the style of a traditional Irish ballad. A tragic love story and a tale of battles fought to fend off the English. During the Tudor conquest of Ireland, rebellious Irish Earls including the Earl of Desmond and his military leader Captain Fitzmaurice, stood against Queen Elizabeth's English forces marching from Dublin, aka "The Pale".  Mercenaries knows as Gallowglass (from an Irish term meaning foreign soldiers) had been assisting Irish earls for centuries, and 700 of them were brought to bear in Desmond's Rebellions. All did not go well for the Irish, as the entire southwest of Ireland (Munster) was ultimately subdued. Hear a love-lorn lass sing to her Gallowglass soldier gone off to fight, never to return.
