In African legend, the love of cowrie shells shows that you could be kin to an oceanic spirit of wealth and earth. She also represents the Goddess of protection in the ocean. They are also a sign of femininity and fertility, with women often wearing them not only to help them conceive, but also to help them give birth safely.

The warriors of Dahomey, 1897. 
The Mino, Minon, Ahosi or Agojie are a former all-female Fon military regiment from the kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin) which existed until the end of the 19th century.
They are selected from among the children of slaves and only the young girls are kept, freed and enter the king's harem. After training, they joined the king's war women's corps, the “Agoledjié”. Some women in Fon society become Mino voluntarily while others are recruited by force.
Every three years, the king's subjects must present their daughters before a council of revision which designates those admitted to the king's house. They become soldiers or officers depending on the social rank of their family. As long as they are Agodjé, women are not allowed to have children or to be married, but they can be offered to the best warriors or chosen as wives by the king. The last known survivor of the warriors is a woman named Nawi.
In 1978, while reporting in the village of Kinta, a Beninese historian met Nawi, who said she had fought the French in 1892. Nawi died in November 1979, aged over 100.

The Garifunas
The Afro-Descendant people who escaped slavery in the Caribbean. The Garifuna are a unique people of the Caribbean region, known for their remarkable history of resistance and survival. Their origin dates back to the end of the 17th century on the island of Saint-Vincent, in the Lesser Antilles, from the mixture of African survivors of shipwrecked or escaped slave ships and the indigenous Carib and Arawak peoples of the island. This fusion of cultures gave rise to a distinct Garifuna identity, characterized by a unique blend of African, Caribbean, and Arawak traditions. The history of the Garifuna is marked by the fight against colonization and slavery.

Qamatha, the creator of the Xhosa people in South Africa, is the son of the sun god Thixo and the earth goddess Jobela.
Qamatha is the creator of all things. Men and beasts emerged from a cave in the east, called an uhlanga. Cattle appeared first, followed by men, then various animals and birds.
It took many unsuccessful attempts before men succeeded in domesticating cattle.
When Qamatha wanted to create dry land he was prevented from doing so by the sea dragon Nkanyamba. His mother, Jobela, wanted to help him in his fight against the dragon and she created four giants who immobilized Nkanyamba.
When Qamatha judged that he had created enough dry land, the four giants were transformed into rock to continue watching over his creation. One of them, Umlindi Wemingizimu ("Watcher of the South"), which has become Table Mountain and overlooks Cape Town in South Africa, can still be seen.
Qamatha sent a chameleon to earth to tell people that they would remain immortal. On his journey to earth, the chameleon felt tired and stopped to rest. A lizard who was passing by asked him where he was going and what he was going to do there.
The chameleon told his story blandly.
So the lizard went ahead and hurried to tell the people that they were all going to die. This was terrible news and the people all began to cry.
The chameleon, hearing this crying, rushed to earth to tell the people that it was not so and that he alone was the bearer of the true news. But these did not believe the chameleon and actually became mortal.
To honor Qamatha it is customary to build some kind of small cairns on which each traveler who passes by adds a stone to the building saying "for Qamatha" in the hope of having luck

Qamatha The Creator

Nhialic is the supreme god in Dinka mythology.

He is associated with the heavens, he created the Earth and established order in the universe. He is closely related to Deng, the god of rain and fertility.
However in some regions, Deng is considered the Supreme Being and Nhialic is not mentioned; or they were considered the same spirit.
According to the myth, Nhialic created the first man (Garang) and woman (Abuk) from clay. As they were very small he placed them in a pot, which he closed. When he opened the pot, Garang and Abuk were fully grown.
In the beginning, the Earth and the sky were close to each other and they were connected by a rope. People who wanted to join Nhialic could climb the rope to visit him. Nhialic told Abuk and Garang that they could plant and pound just one grain of millet per day for their food; it would be enough for them.

One day, however, Abuk decided to plant more than one grain. When she took a long-handled hoe and began to prepare the soil, she accidentally hit Nhialic. Offended by this treatment, Nhialic withdrew away from the Earth. He sent a bird to cut the rope that connected heaven and earth, so that humans could no longer reach it. Before that time, death did not exist. Since then, humans had to work hard to obtain food, and disease and death entered the earth.

It was the great god Nhialic who created the first man (Garang) and the first woman (Abuk) from clay. As they were very small, he placed them in a jar which he closed. Later when he opened the pot, Garang and Abuk were fully developed. Their children were called Deng, Candit and Nyaliep.
Goddess of gardens and patroness of women, Abuk presides over women's activities, particularly the cultivation of millet. She is also the goddess of rivers and streams, sources of life. It must ensure the good supply of water to all living beings. Garang is in charge of everything else.
At the beginning of the world, a rope connected the Earth and the sky where the supreme god, Nhialic, resided. Nhialic allowed Abuk and her husband, Garang, to plant and pound a single grain of millet per day for their subsistence.
One day Abuk, who must have been hungry, planted several grains of millet. She used a long-handled hoe to prepare the ground. At that time, the sky was very close to the Earth and Abuk accidentally hit Nhialic with the handle of his hoe. This angered the god so much that he moved away from Earth and withdrew his participation in human affairs.
He sent Atoc, the little blue bird, to cut the rope that connected the Earth and the sky. From now on it was impossible for men to reach the sky.
Because of this, people had to work hard to get their food and disease and death came to Earth.

Nevertheless, the Dinka honor Abuk as the first woman and see her as the origin of all their traditions. It is celebrated during Dinka festivals and rituals.



Abuk the Clay Woman

Unkulunkulu created humans, animals and everything else.

As the creator of all things, he was also indirectly responsible for the appearance of death on earth. One day, he sent the chameleon, Lunwamba, to tell Men that they were immortal. The chameleon stopped along the way to eat. Unkulunkulu, who was expecting a sign of gratitude for his gift in return, sent the lizard, Intulo, to announce to the men that they were mortal. The lizard did not stop and arrived well before the chameleon. As a consolation, Unkulunkulu instituted marriage so that man could continue to live through his children. He also sent healers to heal the sick and fire to cook food.

He also provided a home for the dead and the stars are actually the eyes of the deceased who look after the world.

Because it was he who taught the Zulus hunting, agriculture and how to make fire. The Zulus are the most warlike nation in southern Africa, and they conceived the omnipotence of their god in political terms. “The irresistible one”, “the one who screams so that all nations are struck with terror” are some of the names that are used to describe him.
When he is dissatisfied with the behavior of Men, he punishes them with a thunderclap, a hailstorm or even a lightning bolt which kills them. He is sometimes called Ukqili, "the wise one" and in this aspect he controls lightning.

With the arrival of the missionaries, Unkulunkulu was assimilated to the God of the Christians.

In Xhosa mythology, Uhlakayana is depicted as a child who was born with supernatural powers, including being able to shapeshift into different forms, and often appeared as both male and female.[However, in Zulu mythology, Uhlakayana is portrayed as a dwarf-like figure in the same category as Tikdoshe. Uhlakayana also tends to take actions based on their malevolent urges. This interpretation differs slightly in Xhosa mythology, where Uhlakayana’s intentions are described as neutral rather than intentionally malicious, though they are capable of great cruelty.

Kwasi Benefo was a young farmer who had numerous livestock and flourishing fields. All he needed was a wife and children to be completely happy. He chose as his wife a young woman who pleased him. They lived happily for a while until she fell ill and died shortly after. Distressed, he bought her an amoasie and pearls for her funeral. This death shocked him a lot but after a long time his friends and relatives decided to marry a young woman from another village; they lived happily. His wife became pregnant but died before she could give birth to their child. The family of his late wife, having heard of Kwasi's sentence, tried to console him by telling him: “What’s past is past, we can’t go back. When you have loved someone with your heart, they do not disappear completely, but you have to leave the dead with the dead and the living with the living.” And they suggested that she marry her sister.The Ashanti believe that the dead inhabit a world that is a mirror image of the world of the living. Death is not a sudden phenomenon because it follows stages. As long as someone remembers a deceased ancestor he is not completely dead. It will truly be dead only after a certain number of generations when no one will be able to call it.
These invisible ancestors (called nsamanfo in Akan) can appear as a force in life, in dreams or in states of deep reverie the mind of a living individual (sunsum) can converse with these nsamanfo.

According to some legends, the Anunnaki traveled from Mesopotamia to Africa, bringing with them their knowledge and traditions. These traditions would include practices and symbols, inherited from their celestial ancestors thus perpetuating a mystical heritage, merging Sumerian myth with local customs, offering a fascinating perspective on the origin of certain African beliefs and traditions. Although these theories are not supported by historical and scientific evidence, they fuel the collective imagination and arouse curiosity about the mysteries of humanity and its origins. The Annunaki are considered to be those beings who are at the origin of the human race thanks to their knowledge of genetics...
