The Alchemist

I’m excited to share Reflections, a collection of six piano (+ three variations) pieces that I originally composed for an upcoming film, set to be released next spring. These pieces are personal and flowing, each one capturing moments of introspection and emotion that emerged through the scoring process.

On a few tracks, I had the pleasure of collaborating with cellist Eurico Ferreira Mathias, whose playing adds a beautiful, soulful depth to the music. His cello brings an extra layer of feeling that really complements the piano and enhances the mood.

Reflections is a quiet, heartfelt project that I hope will give listeners a space to pause and reflect. In these fast-paced and challenging times, I hope this album offers a moment of calm that we all deeply need. Thank you for listening.

This is the 8th track and short but beautiful piano solo song included in '24 Piano Sketches' that is a new solo album from Yuki Murata, the Tokyo-based pianist/composer and member of the cinematic instrumental music band, Anoice, and its side projects, RiLF and Films.

As the name suggests, '24 Piano Sketches' includes 24 piano songs which Yuki Murata plays improvisations on her own grand and upright pianos. This long project is going to add 2 songs every month and ultimately 24 songs in one year, allowing the listeners to feel the changing of the season in real-time via the beautiful, warm, and sometimes melancholic piano sounds.

This time, she purposely selected a cassette tape recorder, a MiniDisc player, and an early generation of iPhone as the recording equipments for each song, unlike studio albums from her own bands such as Anoice. These retro and simplistic recording devices were able to capture not only a creaking noise coming from the piano and the environmental sounds outside the window, but also a noise occurred by cheap microphones, which make this album so impressive. Its nostalgic soundscape may remind her listeners of her first solo album 'Films' and second solo album 'Home'.

The photos taken by her bandmate of Anoice, Takahiro Kido, on his Polaroid camera every season, are adopted as the cover images of each single, and they will added together with the songs to the following BandCamp page every time a single is released.

When I watch a flock of birds playfully soar in the sky above, it's as if there is an instinctive drive to out-fly their peers in a game of tag.  On this windy day, I watched a flock of birds draw pictures of circles, triangles, swirls while diving through, over and above the clouds, clipping wings in a cat and mouse scurry.  And, most astonishing, I see the birds chasing the fastest cloud taken by the wind.  With outstretched wings, like on a magic carpet, the cloud carries the bird through the wind until a new cloud appears.  A magnificent display of beauty, agility, strength and skill in an ordinary sky in my back yard!

My piano piece is a relaxing and dreamy fantasy of flying through the clouds, chasing them with the wind, and carrying me to a place of serenity, beauty and peace.
