Struggles Against Time

Belgian composer and sound artist Adriaan Swerts announces the release of his debut full-length album One in collaboration with piano and coffee records – a collection of twelve deeply personal compositions that, originally, were not conceived with the idea of ever getting released but that, like shards of ice, slowly floated together and formed an island of music.

Both a life-threatening accident – which caused his disability –and the passing of his grandfather confronted Adriaan with the fragility of life. Thematically, this album deals with the eternal, life fading away, death, and the afterlife. At the same time, it attempts to celebrate the beauty of love, life, nature and all that lives on earth.

The characteristic sounds on this album are field recordings of natural landscapes Adriaan visited, which he transformed into instruments and used almost solely to compose. The piano and other acoustic instruments such as the harmonium and strings, as old but not forgotten classical friends, are the other elements that accompany these transformed natural sounds. Icelandic glaciers, geysers, Scottish lochs, waterfalls, oceans and more all found a home on this album. In addition, Swerts uses reel-to-reel tape processing to degrade the sound of the recordings and make them sound broken – a reflection of what his body feels like.

The artwork of the album similarly reflects Adriaan's focus on the theme of the fragility of life and nature. The cracks in the ice symbolise how easily something can be broken into pieces – just like what happened to his body after his accident – but can still be a whole. In addition, Adriaan crafted a videoclip for each piece of the album through the process of cymatics – the study of visible sound vibration and the transformational nature of sound and matter. He filmed the sound vibrations caused by his music in water, unveiling beautiful and unique geometric patterns for each composition.

One comes out digitally and on limited edition CD on the 28th of October, featuring artwork and design by Celia Bayo.

My Rock

With fog hovering over the lake, a cool morning mist is in the air and the sun rises. A fresh beginning. We are not the only ones welcoming a new day. The creatures offer a symphony of sounds that only the Divine could compose. A new day awaits all the living.

Dawn

Curt is the epitome of a Northwoods man: a true gentleman, a trusted friend, and capable of fixing just about anything. Willing to lend a hand, he always makes things work. Most afternoons, the neighbors roll-up at Curt’s garage for a visit . . . and hilarity ensues. How fortunate we all would be to have a “Curt” in our lives.

A single drop, then another. The rhythm of the rain calms our spirit and invokes a oneness with nature. A clap of thunder, then a jagged line of light. Here is the dance of nature’s elements– a perfectly choreographed moment. It comes to an end with one final drop. Then silence.

Old Coyote senses his time here is nearly up. Before passage to the spirit world, he reminisces of his days and nights in the woodlands. Ready, he curls up next to his favorite large rock. His coyote spirit leaves his tired body and ascends. Now, peace.

Music is new dimension of life.

Upon reflection, Julie’s childhood hometown of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, was rich in cultural activity, most notably in the fine arts. It was there that she began private piano instruction at a young age. With her parents’ support and guidance, she was given the foundation for a lifetime of music. 

As a teenager, Julie developed under the tutelage of the highly regarded W. H. Beckmeyer. The routine of these lessons would begin with careful listening to classical vinyl, followed by his mature perspectives on life, so necessary for this young student. This shared listening and comfortable dialogue served as a prologue to the study of music theory and analysis, as well as instruction in proper classical piano technique. Mr. Beckmeyer encouraged Julie to draw from her life experiences and to pour those feelings into her playing, which remains a hallmark of her music to this day. 

Julie continued with her classical piano studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she received her degree in music. While there, she received training from two of the most respected piano instructors in the country, Ian Hobson and Kenneth Drake. Julie was uniquely inspired by the repertoire of Chopin and Debussy and, informed by these masters, began composing piano solos of her own– an echo which is heard throughout this current work. 

Of her several solo piano albums, Homage to the Northwoods perhaps best exemplifies her refined pianistic skills and matured sensibilities as a composer. What was once a nascent promise has come to full fruition. Julie’s evocative musical gift is evident on this album, and it is her sincere wish that through each song you, too, will experience the wonders of the Northwoods.

This is for my personal mix listening to fixed or finished track pieces. Enjoy noticing how my spirit is always moving.

Syd Lewis is a multi-instrumentalist composer based in Pittsburgh, PA. Varying in many styles and genres. Influences are Igor Stravinsky, Skip James, Guitar Slim, Robbie Basho, Stevie Wonder, Harpo Marx and John Cage

Classically trained pianist and multi instrumentalist since age 5, I am now composing what I call "Neo-Classical Electronic" music. The compositions are based on classical music theory but using mostly electronic sounds. Hope you enjoy the music. Thanks for listening.
