Episode 148: Ray Wylie Hubbard's Life Well Lived

When Tresor founder Dimitri Hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in East Berlin on March 13th 1991, he had little idea that the
space he had unlocked would fast become one of Berlin's most influential and enduring techno clubs. "We didn't know what would
happen 10 months later," he says. "We signed a lease for a year. Which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another
three months…”

As Tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is
worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by
the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

Today, though the boom and bust of globalised capitalism has filled the void that followed the Berlin Wall, and techno has become a
worldwide industry, we face a new political chapter, one defined by populism, nationalism and mistrust. Contemporary creatives should
take inspiration from Tresor's story, an extraordinary experiment born from improvisation, resourcefulness and social neglect that
uplifted the spirits of inner city communities for a quarter-century.

This record marks the spirit of those 25 years of creativity, a paean to the psychedelic music of Dimitri’s youth. From the signature
magnetic soundscapes of Vainqueur to the dark textures of upcoming Being producer Shao; from Jon Hassell’s slow epicurean volutes,
to the ritual auras of Marcelus and Claudia Anderson’s contributions; from the dub-infused pioneering programming of Juan Atkins and
Moritz von Oswald, to Mønic’s enthralling cadences, it represents some of the old and new names that continually epitomise Tresor's
perennial spirit of ingenuity. “We were space pioneers," says Dimitri.

The East Berlin of 1991 may have disappeared to gentrification, with Tresor's lonely vanguard joined by an army of venues catering to an
international array of clubbers benefiting from low cost travel, many of whom settle in the city for good. Berlin is Europe's economic
engine, headquarters to global industry and sole traders alike, where Polish, Kurdish and English are as likely to be spoken as German.
That range of influences is felt in all areas of life, not least in the city's music.

"Without Tresor, Berlin would not be what it is today," concludes Dimitri. "Even though it sounds a bit pretentious, it is true. Tresor was
the prototype for an extraordinary club. It was only possible as a combination of the right time, the right place, the right content and
determined people."

Jo Harvey and Terry Allen's "Rawhide and Roses" radio show aired on Sundays from 1967 to 1971 on the underground station KPPC-FM and AM 106.7, broadcast from the basement of the Pasadena Presbyterian Church (PPC). Terry produced and programmed, while Jo Harvey served as the host, writer, storyteller, and on-air personality; she was the first female country music DJ.

The program was documented, but only erratically; these five themed shows and fragments have been edited together from all known surviving tapes, which reside in The Allen Collection of the Texas Tech University archives.

The city of Boulder, Colorado performs monthly tests of its public warning system. I recorded the May 4, 2020 test from about two miles outside the city. The sounds are distant, but still loud enough to cause concern if one were not expecting the test.

The recording starts with a barely audible spoken announcement "This is a warning system test", overwhelmed by sounds of birds, dog walkers and local automobile traffic. After a short delay, the sirens rise in pitch and seem to play sustained chords for a few minutes. The birds continue chittering, unconcerned by the sirens in the distance. After the sirens drop, the final spoken announcement "This is a warning system test" is repeated a number of times as the test ends. The test lasts nearly five minutes.

I heard the warning system during a real emergency in September 2013.  "Flooding in progress, do not cross Boulder Creek" or words to that effect were repeated along with the sirens for an extended period of time. The danger was real. Hopefully some lives were saved by the warning system.

Evening, Morning? I recorded using a TASCAM in a basement with an annoying rolling chair over me, I needed a smoke, great Junto time, I recorded getting the cigarette, walking outside, getting Sour Patch Kids from a bowl, smoking and taking Charlie the Chihuahua to the bathroom. I selected the rolling chair, cause it has been driving me bonkers with multiple office chairs rolling above. I took close mouth samples while chewing slowly. I then took the sample and ran it thru Live with the Push slicing it up in sampler in the section with the rolling boosted, played and looped thru 16 bars. I then layered this with the original recording of a cigarette trip to the front porch and back. The windows in all spaces were open.

I woke up early and saw this weeks brief. The normal sounds of morning, birdsong and occasional traffic, a nearby train, the occasional buzzing of bees in the garden.  Talking from a nearby garden. Life is all around us even in a time of lockdown (which is becoming less and less adhered to as the government talks of lifting restrictions here in the UK)

I recorded this using my trusty Zoom H4N with wide angle internal mics.

Recording the sounds outside the top floor window at 7AM on Friday morning with my DR-05X - minimal processing (EQing only). Mainly birdsong, light distant traffic, and some faraway sounds of the rubbish bins being collected.

This project is a collaboration with the artist and experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats.

Step 1: Make a field recording, indoors or outdoors. Your recording may be of any length. If you make your recording outdoors, be attentive to sounds of nature that are now more audible due to restrictions on human activity during the pandemic. If you are under strict quarantine and cannot go outside, create your soundscape indoors, capturing the domestic sounds that you consider characteristic of your current circumstances.

Step 2: Upload your recording per the standard Junto instructions below.

Step 3: Download field recordings by other Junto members. Play the downloaded tracks in one ear, leaving your other ear open to hear the sounds in your midst. As you listen to the stereo soundscapes, your hearing will be extended, situating you in acoustic environments that you’ll share with other participants.

6 AM Ducks in the Rain was recorded on the balcony of my condo overlooking Lake of the Ozarks (Missouri, USA) using my Zoom H1 placed on a picnic table covered with a tablecloth. I’ve edited out a couple of noticeable clicks that always seem to show up in my Zoom recordings that sound like they come from the device itself as it adjusts to a change in temperature. That’s my theory, anyway. The steady rain on the metal roofs of covered docks below creates the white noise that makes up most of the recording. The mic also picked up the sound of some ducks conversing nearby, possibly the mother duck who is sitting on a nest of eggs that is visible four floors below the balcony. Near the end of the recording our cat Koko appears and inquires about what I’m doing.

7 AM Private Barista was recorded with my Zoom H1 placed on a countertop in my kitchen as I prepare coffee for my wife and myself. Every morning I follow the exact same routine in my coffee preparations, using a Keurig for my wife’s cup and an espresso machine for mine (with unsteamed milk/half&half). I also warm mine a bit in the microwave near the end of the recording.

9 AM Boat Dock Repair was another Zoom H1 recording from the balcony and captures the sounds of some workers repairing the private boat docks on the lake just below, along with the conversations of the workers. Some boats can be heard as the wake begins to wake up and get active following the morning rain. Nearby neighbors can also be heard on balconies above and below. The sounds from the passing boat at the 9:10 minute mark reminds me of why I love of the drone so much. Koko makes another appearance at the end of this one.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
