Portuguese label Kokölò return as Alfonsvs delivers his ‘Bad Habits’ EP, backed by a remix from Answer Code Request.
Founded earlier this year, Portuguese label Kokölò made an immediate impact with its debut release(that we had the pleasure of premiering) from anonymous artist and label founder Rave Child, gaining support from the likes of Laurent Garnier,.VRIL, Patrice Baümel, and Nathan Micay. Up next, the label turns to another member of its collective as label event programmer Alfonsvs makes his first outing on the imprint. Returning after a brief hiatus, allowing time to find and refocus his sound, he delivers his first EP since 2017’s ‘44th Romance’ as he showcases his musical influences and unveils two powerful originals via his ‘Bad Habits’ EP - accompanied by a warping remix from Berghain resident Answer Code Request.

‘Physical Education’ is a powerful techno voyage that combines dubby stabs, icy hats, and punchy drums to crescendo towards a euphoric ‘hands-in-the-air’ moment. 

The EP, mastered by Conor Dalton at Calyx Mastering Studios, features artwork from young illustrator David Duarte - with the design showcasing his visual interpretation of the title track.

PREMIERE: Alfonsvs - Physical Education [Kokölò]

We zoom in on the local Amsterdam scene this week and welcome DJ Merlín to the series. He is the programmer of the lauded local unit Kraft und Licht. Whether it's deep in the Amsterdam forest or in the hull of an old freight ship, they bring together the right ingredient of audience and artists that include Byron Yeates, D. Tiffany, our friend Aleksa Alaska, Sansibar, and many others. He boasts a major in composition and sounds design from the Arts Academy in Utrecht and regularly blesses the K&L line-ups with his edgy and silky smooth selections. With over ten years of experience as a DJ and a string of quality releases on Dubiks and Kraft und Licht Records, he knows how to bring magic to the dancefloor. We are excited to hear his upcoming releases in 2023 as he is one to keep an eye on. Lock in for an hour-long selection with some of his own upcoming music sprinkled in.

It’s always a real treat to hear fresh material from Efdemin, and his latest project looks set to be his most ambitious so far. The techno artist is currently prepping for the release of his Naïf mix, a blend between album and DJ mix that’s soon to drop on Curle Recordings. 

Comprised of 29 unreleased tracks, Naïf features new material from the likes of Margaret Dygas and Steve Bicknell, as well as 10 new cuts from Efdemin. Efdemin and Dygas will both be joining us on the same bill in just over a week, so he sent over an excerpt of the mix featuring tracks from both of the producers. Richly textured with chugging drums and trippy vocal clips, it covers the same kind of immersive techno both artists are likely to bring to Farringdon on 17th March.

Premiere: Naïf – Efdemin (excerpt) [Curle]

Tresor Records marks its 250th release with a very special project indeed. Continuing to forge ahead whilst remaining ever mindful of its legacy, Tresor proudly presents Infiniti - The Remixes: a trilogy of classic cuts and new reworks from one of its original Detroit linchpins Juan Atkins.

Dubbed as his “pure techno” project, Atkins produced two full-length albums under the Infiniti moniker—The Infiniti Collection, released by Tresor in 1996, and Skynet two years later. 16 years on and they are as relevant today as they were pioneering then, brought further up-to-date here with a series of fresh takes from some of techno’s pioneering and esteemed figures: Thomas Fehlmann, TV Victor, Function, Redshape, Sleeparchive and the re-release of dubtechno vanguard Moritz Von Oswald's remix of "Think Quick", originally released in '94 on Metroplex.

Part One - The Orb’s Thomas Fehlmann picked two tracks, one in each album, to form a very special combo-mix. The shimmering “Walking On Water” and "Raindrops" come together in a beautiful old-school sounding version. Tresor Records ambient stalwart TV Victor plies his vision to present a hypnotic take on the gently elevating “Thought Process”. 

Part Two picks up the pace, heading further down the timeline with “Flash Food”—originally released in 1995 as part of one of the label’s famous annual compilations, re-edited by Sandwell District’s Function. Skynet’s punchy classic on the flip, “Skyway” rounds off the EP with a killer old-school remix by techno’s masked crusader Redshape.

Part Three concludes with a remix package of The Infiniti Collection’s brooding slow-burner “Think Quick”, backed with an offering from one of Berlin’s revered electronic practitioners Sleeparchive and the re-release of Moritz Von Oswald's remix, initially released on Metroplex in 1994 - a rarity.

Blankstairs began as a series of all-ages DIY parties spawning from visual artists Nathaniel Young and Warren Mark Way. The events possessed a certain renegade and unhinged energy and, at the time, fulfilled their desire to engage with Portland’s music community.

The events were hosted in art galleries and whatever various alternative spaces were at the two’s disposal at the age of 19. Local visual artists were often presented on the same plane as the musical performances driving the events. In time, the pair found themselves surrounded by friends seeking a suitable platform for their visual and musical output, and thus the label was born.

The first release and compilation in July of 2013 presented a triad of subdued, stoned-out jams and somber ambient music, alongside club constructions of various shapes and sizes. Fast forwarding to the present finds Nathaniel and Warren both based out of New York and continuing to release music that represents the artists that are immediately involved in their lives –– the label being an expression of that which surrounds them.

In celebration of six years of operations Blankstairs is excited to issue a three part compilation featuring work from artists based in both spiritual homes for the label –– Cascadia and New York City, a selection that we feel is an accurate representation from Blankstairs friends and family both near and far.

MNMT Premiere: Avancera – Who Is Princess Zorldo?

Danza Nativa, a Buenos Aires-based label, continues a phenomenal streak of releases with the debut album from young French producer Olorun. 'Indirect Image' sees Olorun drawing inspiration from his trip to South America, using exciting field recordings from the jungle, which, paired with tribal rhythms, create a wonderful atmosphere that is both driving and calming.
'Iridescence,' our premiere for today, is a beautifully crafted journey with subtle, ethereal pads that immaculately blend with field recordings, gentle percussions, and pulsating sub-bass. Imagine, 7 am, at party in the middle of the jungle, the Sun is up, you have the biggest smile on your face with your arms in the air, and this track is wrapping up what was the party to remember forever. I can totally see it.

'Indirect Image' LP and in turn 'Iridescence' are being released on February 15 via Danza Nativa.
