Ben Sims - Run It Red 016 (March 2016 / NTS Radio)

I began my Native American flute journey in 2000 after attending a Robert Mirabal concert. I was so taken by his blending of Native American flute and percussion with a rock band, that it was then that I decided to begin playing the flute. I have been fascinated by Native American cultures and history ever since I was young, so performing music on the flute came as a natural extension of that passion.
 
The song “Desert Sky” was inspired by the stunning splendor of the many sunrises and sunsets I experienced while spending time traveling through the Southwest. In it, I attempted to capture the varied palette of rich colors, peacefulness, and enchantment that only a Southwest sky can produce.

Desert Sky

This is a project we did with Nolan Warden from the Ethnomusicology department of UCLA. The samples were taken from a wax cylinder that was recorded in the 1930's. This was particularly cool project because DJ Shub's last name is General and so is the man recorded on the cylinder.  They're also both Cayuga from Six Nations reserve, so it's not too far off to think that they're related, hence the name "General Generations".  Here's a link to UCLA's Ethnomusicology post.

Osprey is a messenger, guide, fearless protector of its young, and guardian of both the Air (Consciousness) and the Water (the Unconscious) it dives into for fish. Like the shaman, osprey moves between the seen and unseen realms joining both worlds together. Osprey is a master shapeshifter who merges light and darkness, seeing both inner and outer reality. When we align our energies with Osprey, we are able to access our inner truth or sense of what is correct. Inner truth reflects, like a mirror, the higher, universal truth that exists in every situation. We should allow this higher truth to guide our actions and transform our life.

Power animal drumming is a shamanic way to evoke and internalize animal archetypes. An animal archetype represents the spirit and attributes of the entire species of that animal. Shamanism is the endeavor to cultivate ongoing relationships with power animals to gain insight, healing methods, and other vital information that can benefit the community. When an animal spirit is invoked, there is often an accompanying rhythm that comes through. Shamans frequently use these unique rhythms to summon their helping spirits for the work at hand. The spirit calling rhythms on this CD evolved over many years through me and fellow shamanic circle drummers as gifts from our animal relations to all who seek the oneness of everything. Evocative drum rhythms, rattles, flutes, didgeridoos, animal calls, nature sounds, and synthesizers connect you with the collective strength and wisdom of power animals.
