Indeed, the VL1 is still one of the most expressive synths.   FYI, I recently released a powerful editor for his little brother the VL70m. Unfortunately I do not receive sufficient requests (yet) and it is difficult to reach out to the VL1 users  because I'm not allowed to publish info on those popular Windcontroller/sax forums.. While the abilities of the VL1 are very impressive, I don't agree that the 6-string model in the Korg Kronos II is not on par if not more advanced than the VL1. Having created many of the factory patches the Korg Kronos II 6-String engin, it is equally mind blowing, imo.

Classic Peelie from 1983. Like many I grew up listening to his late night radio show. It started at 10 pm just as Radio One switched from crappy AM Radio broadcasting to lush FM. This is a complete radio show - you will never ever hear such a varied mix of quality music on the radio ever again, intertwined with JP's unique wit and charm.
I've made this downloadable, so you can enjoy this at your own leisure on your MP3-thingy players(yes folks - I still don't own one).

Between 1990 and 1994 researchers at CCRMA Stanford collaborated with Yamaha making the VL1, VL1m, VL7 and VP1. These synthesizers set the standard for Physical Modeling technology and are yet to be rivaled by modern DSP platforms(Kyma, Tassman, Reaktor, Max/MSP, Korg Oasys-PCI, Sculpture, etc.). The VL1 series of synths remain a sound designers playground and have been used in many film and television shows. This quick demo explores the unusual reactive tones and textures of the VL1.  No external processing or FX was applied to this recording, everything you hear is direct from the synth.

I found this mixtape on a concession stand at a rave in LA in the mid nineties it was the first heard of him and I was really into this sound and buying lots of records related, it was the peak of nineties techno and I was also always hunting for tapes like this to study and better myself as a DJ. Over the following years I had quite a few conversations with Mike from his days at Record Time in search of the rare gems that I was having a hard time finding in LA. Years later Mike came to Los Angeles for the NAMM show and I put together a party and had him play, he stayed at my place I hadn't released any records yet and he kindly gave me production tips and shared some old stories about his days in Detroit sitting in my living room till the late hours of the morning. I am doing for him as I would like for anyone to do for me when i'm gone and share something positive to remember someone by.

I know many know Mike for his house music, I knew Mike as a Techno Dj from Detroit. Here i share a very rare Techno mix from Mike Huckaby I had this on repeat that summer, Enjoy !
