Charles Wright is a prominent songwriter and recording artist who gained popularity in the late 1960s as the leader of the popular funk and soul band, Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1940, Wright's Southern roots and his passion for music shaped his unique blend of soul, funk, and blues. He relocated to Los Angeles with his family as a teenager, where he continued to pursue music and was exposed to the thriving West Coast R&B scene.

Wright began his professional music career by performing with various local groups, eventually forming his own band, the Wright Sounds. In 1967, the Wright Sounds merged with the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, and Wright became the bandleader. The newly formed Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band signed with Warner Bros. Records and released a series of albums and singles throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s that gained commercial and critical success. Their most iconic song, "Express Yourself," became a pop and R&B hit, peaking at No. 12 on the Hot 100 and No. 3 on the R&B chart, and has been sampled by numerous artists over the years, including N.W.A.

Following the disbandment of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band in 1973, Wright embarked on a solo career, exploring various musical styles, including gospel, jazz, and blues. Though not achieving the same commercial success as his earlier work with the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, Wright's solo career showcased his artistic evolution and his unwavering dedication to music.

Wright's career as a songwriter and recording artist has left an indelible mark on the music industry. His work with the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band laid the groundwork for the development of funk music in the 1970s, and his songs have been sampled by countless artists across various genres.
