Julian Moon proves herself to be a formidable raconteur on the wittily insightful story-songs she has written for her upcoming debut album. Whether she’s capping off a tale of her dire financial circumstances by wryly proclaiming, “I know my life fuckin’ rocks” on “One Penny,” or channeling an overworked barista dealing with an impatient customer waiting for her “non-fat one-pump latte with two added shots of espresso” in “A Cup of Coffee,” or calling out a thoughtless serial heart-breaker in denial on “How To Break A Heart,” Moon delivers her keen observations with a genuine vulnerability that makes her work appealingly relatable.

“Pop music is awesome and I love it, but I’m not sure it’s always very relatable to an ordinary person,” says Moon, who was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has resided in Los Angeles on and off for the past six years. “I can't afford Louis Vuitton. I don't go to the club and drink Patrón. I wanted my songs to come from this place of, ‘Okay, I get up, I work. I've gone to college, I'm still broke.’ I think that's something a lot of people my age deal with. We’re trying to figure out this life. I wanted to be a voice out there saying, ‘It's not just you who’s struggling.’”

Moon’s sly commentary goes down sweet thanks to her intimate vocals (think a young Suzanne Vega) and bright acoustic-pop sound, with production by Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry). Moon was raised by musically inclined parents who loved singer-songwriters like Fiona Apple, Patti Griffin, Tori Amos, and Sarah McLachlan. At 16, Moon asked her dad to show her a few guitar chords then locked herself in her room for months. “I learned how to play by teaching myself Jason Mraz songs,” she says. While studying screenwriting at L.A.’s Loyola Marymount University, Moon began attending open mic nights on campus, realizing that performing enabled her to connect with people more easily. She was offered a publishing deal as a sophomore and planned to be a “hippie songwriter chick in Portland” before Warner Bros. Records came calling with a recording contract and the opportunity to send her into the studio with Wells.

“There is such a magic when it’s just a voice and guitar,” Moon admits, “but I didn't want to have this opportunity to make this record and then have it be something I could have done in a basement somewhere,” she says. “I wanted it to be the best it could be.”
