Soundscape by Katch23 music for The Liverpool International Music Festival
Brief
To produce a soundscape for the secret clubhouse appearing at the Summer Jam at the Liverpool International Music Festival. The soundscape is to reflect Liverpools’ clubbing culture since the 60’s and will be used alongside visual cues to promote users to take a trip down memory lane. It will take them through a tunnel and then into a magical club space where they will be able to dance and relive dance history in Liverpool.
Research
As well as internet research, I have spoken to people from Liverpool who have shared information on various clubs they used to visit, particular songs and some amazing experiences. I have also researched the bands and acts from Liverpool that have helped to shape the clubbing culture over time.
Production
I compiled a list of approximately thirty tracks initially. I wanted to include as many artists from Liverpool as possible to give a sense of how they shaped the musical landscape at the time. There are also tracks included which were particularly big in clubs such as The Quadrant, The Kazimier and Cream.
I wanted to produce a live DJ mix rather than a software mix as I felt would give the soundscape a more organic and energetic feel. I picked 21 tracks from the initial 30 and tried to arrange them loosely in a chronological order. So starting off with some Merseybeat, soul, funk, then moving into Punk, 80’s and then into the club classics in the 90’s. The mix was recorded live along with some video footage which may be used as visuals for the space. I managed to fit in 21 tracks in just over 21 minutes, which was very challenging. The mix has not been edited and is a completely live recording.

LIMF Summer Jam Soundscape
