Eight years have passed since Cherrystones stayed true to his Word and pulled together the sympathetic sounds of the psychedelic ghetto. We’ve reached Critical Mass and we need to wipe the slate clean.

London’s best kept secret, Cherrystones has been on the underground scene for a while. People kinda speak of his grooved-out genius in hushed whispers.

You might have clocked his genre-busting album of Cherry Edits? Or when he closed down the final night of ATP after a decade long residency? Or when his jams pricked up the ears of a certain Creation Records label boss and he flirted with the mainstream? Or when the heat moved from London to NYC which saw our man deliver an epic Morricone-inspired LP while spending time as DJ Harvey’s sole label-mate. You might be following his endless list of production and remix work for the likes of Goat, The Horrors and Hospital Productions or caught him opening and closing shows at the request of Faust, Sunn 0))), The Oh Sees, Moon Duo, Chrome, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Kutmah...

Or maybe you just know him from a night in a club with Cherrystones - where his distinctive ability to blend Italian film soundtracks, garage fuzz, krautrock and punk and translate them into a hip hop context defies categorisation.

On Critical Mass, Cherrystones tunes us in to fourteen groups separated by locale but united by a restless urge to create on their own terms. 
From Rizzo’s nihilistic Moogie-boogie to a pre-teen Chandra’s isolated no-wave. Through Dojoji’s Downtown-via-Lagos inspired punk-funk and Fote’s dark, industrial groove, Critical Mass presents a snapshot of an international underground enthralled with the possibility of the new.

Disco Segreta announces DS M 006 official repress of 1984 italo-boogie track “Tobago” by Pat&Pats.

Ever dreamt to travel to Trinidad&Tobago? 
Disco Segreta makes this dream come true with its 6th release: the much awaited officially licensed reissue of this tropicalo-disco synth bass boogie atomic bomb, from the original analog masters.

Written in late 1983 by Mario Baldoni aka Miro (of “Real Life Games” LP (1977) and Brina’s “Stranamore” (1984) 7” fame), was originally released in July 1984 on the small Pineapple label  – a sublabel of Armando Sciascia’s “Vedette” – with close to no success and a pressing fault: a glitch on the vocal verse of the instrumental version, that affected all copies.
This tropical summerish blend of italo and boogie, along with the male/female alternate spanish/english singing, turned into a true classic of the genre over the years, slowly making the playlists of the most respected DJs and diggers worldwide. 

The 4-tracks 12" features the original vocal and instrumental versions in their original lenght, carefully dubbed from the analog stereo masters and taken back to new life through Disco Segreta’s usual respectful mastering. Also, two new remixes are featured.

“Miro’s Piano Paradise” on A2, is the truly unique chance of a new revamped version by the track original author, resulting in a balearic-infused mellow rework, inspired to 1989-1993 italian house era, whose key elements were – among others - repeated melodic piano chord progressions alongside lustful female vocals and the blueprint factory presets sounds of the likes of KORG M1, Roland TB-909, and D50.
Flipside sees on B2 the chiefs of Berlin’s “Oscillator” and “Dancing for Mental Health” parties, Tom Bolas & Andrea Dama, working with their “Bolas&Dama Dub”, a contemporary rendition of a possible “Dub” version of Tobago.

Deborah Gray and Roy Nicolson formed ARVO in the early 80’s, high on the fumes of European synth-pop. After releasing their sole album, 1984’s Luna, the group evaporated. Like an island vanished from the map, ARVO has since only resurfaced in the realm of misty lore. Now, New Zealand label Strangelove Music are reviving two choice cuts from Luna along with remixes by Australia’s Hysteric and France’s Shelter. We bring you the original version of “Bikini,” premiered this week by Frosty on Open End, his Red Bull Radio voyage around the world. “Bikini” is a samba-hipped twister fit to frolick on the sand with Lizzy Mercier Descloux or Antena. Enjoy this sunsplashed slow-mo synth stunner.

« Recorded in Busan, Republic of Korea by former US special agent M.B. Jones, R.O.K. Spy documents both his stay in a country on the verge of a nuclear conflict and his mission there (for obvious confidential reasons, the purpose of this mission is only to be referred to in an elusive way). While most of his personal belongings have disappeared – or, more likely, been destroyed – we are very thankful for the safe receipt of a USB stick containing 7 songs recorded in Autumn 2017, alongside a drawing and a few handwritten notes. We are proud to now be able to share these with you.

In order to do so, we hastily came up with a label. The circumstances under which it was born lead us into calling it “drama”. This release is DRAMA1.

The content of this LP is a seemingly disparate set of pop-not-pop tunes, flirting with dance music on songs like the apocalyptical disco Nuclear War or the bizarre and mind puzzling boogie Pusan Perimeter. Though it is quite hard to put words on M.B. Jones’s productions (one may accurately call it an “oddball” of a record), his musical testimony may sit somewhere in-between Holger Czukay’s most narrative pieces and Arthur Russel’s most cheerful moments, sharing with these two brilliant musicians a genuine feeling of intimacy emanating from each second of his songs. The only thing that may be said without a doubt is that these 7 songs are the product of someone whose ear has been attentive and receptive to all sorts of contemporary musical genres (from trap to experimental electronic music and EDM).

It’s still not clear whether the cryptic lyrics evoke situations which already occurred, whether they are oracles, some insider’s warnings or whether they are the product of a mind in a hallucinatory state. On Poison Pill – the closing song – he is particularly ambiguous : “the CIA bought me a trip / I put the tab under my lip / They want to build a shopping mall / On the DMZ wall”. We’ll leave the interpretation to you. »
